What kind of Dog do you have?

Accidents happen. I was attacked by an Afghan hound that had been left tied up outside our house by a visiting friend of the family. I was about seven and just walked by it to go into the backyard, and it attacked. It left a scar on my arm, but I don't recall any consequences for the owner. The dog's name was Monster btw- lol. Taught me to be careful around strange dogs, that's for sure.

These days, one call to animal control can fix that. About two moths ago a neighbor of mine had their mastiff outside, unleashed. It was prob about 140lbs and it attacked my golden retriever puppy who at the time was about 25lbs.

She didn't end up being hurt much but I called animal control, which I usually wouldn't have done, but the owner wasn't sorry in the slightest. Long story short, animal control slapped them with $700 in fines and quarantined their dog for 11 days.

You just can't let a mastiff go unleashed. No, it should not happen, unless you are in a remote area where FOR SURE there are no small children or smaller dogs. I don't like letting my GSD off leash in parks either, only in fallow fields near the airport and the like. You just can't predict what might pique their prey or fight drives in a populated park. I would go so far as to say that would go for any larger breed that has been bred for guarding, fighting, or hunting.

The ONLY place my dogs are unleashed is inside my own property and that goes ONLY for the pugs, I know my french is not to be trusted and will bolt as soon as possible, she is not human agressive but she is with any other living creature so I dont even risk her lose in my own property until it is fully fenced and boarded in the bottoms so she cant dig either....(she's escaped twice )

but currently a border collie tho she's at a friends until my house is repaired..and its starting to look like she may just stay there because it seems like a really good fit for all involved

prior to her almost exclusively german shepherds...eastern or western imports only
tho Ive fostered a ton of dogs (all kinds of breeds), and had a jack and a lab..my exhusband now has the lab and my jack passed away


Ive been pondering a newfie if my border collie winds up being rehomed permanently

My ex husband had a newfie before he met me. He loved the dog but they really like the water and really are meant for cold weather. Hip dysplasia is an issue with them, too, so be careful (actually, it's a problem with virtually every damn giant breed).

This was a dog that would gladly jump into freezing water. His used to actually sleep with her head in the water dish.

I don't want all that coat to take care of myself, too much like work. If I was going for a giant breed I'd get a bull mastiff or dog d'Bordeaux.

Malusky. Half Alaskan Malamute, half Siberian Husky. The Malamute is more dominant in him, he's 95-98 lbs, but with pretty blue eyes that have a black ring on the outside. Zarr, a damn good dawg. Smarter than shit, learns things easily, has a mind of his own, IS NOT like a lab or retriever, they don't aim to please thier owner, walk down thier own path. Very independant like a cat.

Huskies and malamutes are one the very few breeds that like to "hang out with their own" if you get a huskey and a chihuahua and a rot they'll be fine together but if you have a 2 huskey's they'll stick together... interesting behavior how the recognize and prefer their own

Is it them or the Russian wolfhounds that are so tall? One time I was at the dog show in Philadelphia and I wasn't really paying attention to where I was walking. I looked up and I was in a forest of wolfhounds Weirdest feeling on earth being eye to eye with a dog and they're standing on all fours! My sister in law owned a Neopolitan mastiff for a while and even he wasn't as tall as these dogs were.

Irish wolfhounds are the big boys....short lives, sadly...maybe 8 years? The heart has to work too hard to pump out through those long limbs.
