What kind of Dog do you have?

In semi-related news, I had the pleasure of making my GSD drop a week-long dead rabbit roadkill (our neighborhood is overrun with bunnies) from his mouth this morning. I've been avoiding it successfully all week, but this morning I wasn't on the ball. It took a few seconds, but the thing finally got spat out.
Gross. Just in time for Easter.

yeah..I live in new england...have considered getting certified in water rescue with a dog and live near a major river in the state that has tons of trails etc..plus like snow shoeing in the winter...
I thought a newf would be a good fit...I also prefer large dogs and would like to get away from aggressive breeds...

I love german shepherds but I have actually been sued over two of my shepherds
a family at my daughters preschool has a bordeaux, nother friend breeds bull mastiffs

too much force behind those animals for me to be comfortable with them with children (not that a newf is a lightweight)
Yeah, shepherds can bond too hard with their "pack leader" sometimes, they really only seem to tolerate everybody else in the house. I've met a couple that seem to believe a household hierarchy is as follows:
1. Pack leader.
2. Them.
3. Everyone/thing else, including children.

My father's one Shepherd made that clear to me. One time I was about 7 or 8 and minding my own business petting him when nobody was in sight and in an eyeblink he snapped my hand up, but only a hold grip, not a skin break grip. Damned dog looked me right in the eye holding my hand in his mouth. I was too surprised to be scared and I just stood there and looked right back and waited. After about 20 seconds or so he literally spit my hand out and turned his back on me. Message received and understood on my behalf (i.e., I'll put up with your ass, pup, but remember your place in this pack).

Oh the Newfie will loooooovvvvveeee winter in New England (I used to get beer from a store were the owner had one, the dog used to go nap in the beer cooler and knew to push the handle to let itself out). And they are gentle spirited. In fact, if they're not kept busy working they'll turn positively lazy.

My son has a Husky/Hybrid Wolf. He is a damn handful, he is 90 pounds and very loving and protective towards my son. He is playful and a great dog for the most part, but is extremely vicious towards strangers and other dogs. Be very careful with these types of dogs around people or other animals that are strangers in their home space. Tebow has killed dogs, cats, coons and coyotes around our house. If it invades his territory it's as good as dead. You should also leave nothing you want to keep outside, he tears up flower pots, water hoses, and has chewed up all 4 of the rocking cairs on our front porch.

If there was any part of me that wanted to own a dog again...it's completely gone now. I remember now why I don't have a dog. If I do own a dog again, it will be because the man I'm living with wants one and he will be responsible for training him to my standards or they are BOTH GONE :FRlol:

A wolf hybrid, even one that only has a relatively small fraction of wolf blood, is not a totally domesticated animal. By breeding back to the wild stock you tap back into some primal instinctive behaviors that have been switched off over centuries of domestication.

lol @ you naming your dog after a quarterback who played for a school you could never get into

And FYI I would listen to anything MuscleMom has to say, she is obviously extremely knowledgeable on this subject. She was spot on on my sons Husky/Wolf, even before he was able to move around good. These dogs also like to greet each other by standing on their back paws and almost embracing, its another very annoying trait that stems from their wolf origins. If he likes you your ass will be getting hugged and on his back feet the bish is about 5'8 inches tall.
