What is wrong with my PC??

Sounds like your mainboard is having a bad day.

You may need to crack it open and check all your physical connections.

If it is a more serious problem, your hard drive controller may be going south as well...

I got a new PC recently and it was rebooting when I would go to run a DVD. Seemed the DVD software was not cooperating with the OS.

I updated the DVD software and it was fine.

Is your MSN Messenger working....?

It will not go past the "insert boot disk" page.

When I reboot it with the XP cd, it states that no hard drive has been detected.

I opened the side and fiddled with the connections, but no luck.

When you boot up, you can go in to the BIOS and see if it will detect you hard drive. You may have to do this manually.

This is normally how it is done, althought it varies...

During bootup, hit the DELETE key (and no, KAYNE, I am not talk to you...:) )

This should take you in to your BIOS/CMOS setting.

There should be a Hard Drive autodetect option. Run it and see if it finds the hard drive. If it won't you can force the settings, but all new mainboards should autodetect the drive.

It will go through the Primary IDE controller (being zero) and detect master/slave. The same process will occur for the Secondary IDE hard drive (being one). If it does not find anything, you have problems.

XBiker,

It found the hardrive but this does not function

If that is the case, your hard drive controller sounds like it is fine.

The drive may have a physical or electronic problem. Hard drives are part mechanical and part solid state...

You said the PC is new, I would recommend taking it back to whomever you purchased it from and see if they can test the drive(s).

Will do.

I put in my XP Pro CD that I had from before now it is starting windows?

What is going on?

The XP Pro CD is bootable, so your CD ROM ran the autoexec.bat and the initial Windows setup is starting.

Normal? God I hope not. My machine's five years old now and still runs like a champ. Hope you got your money back.

When I did tech support for Dell a couple years ago, I'd take calls from people that just turned it on for the first time with that problem. It could have been damaged in shipping or it could have just been a defective hardrive. It definitely does happen. The sudden reboot thing sounds like a memory problem. If your memory is loose, it will randomly reboot. Definitely don't get XP home again if you can

Shut your computer off, then resart it. When it the company screen first come on, keep hitting f8. Put your computer in safe mode. Then delete the last program you downloaded or installed. Maybe even the last 2. Shut it down again and then restart it. See if that works.

Too late, got the XP home again. The warranty does not allow for me to upgrade to the XP Pro I have, either.

I wish that you would have posted that yesterday, but since my hard drive died, I doubt that I could have even started it in safe mode.

It is 3 weeks old.

I could tell you numbers of possibilities that my be happening, and a lot of troubleshooting you could do, but I would not touch it at all, do not try to trouble shoot or anything, just simply take it back to be replaced or repaired, if you start messing with it, and you take it back for refund to to be fixed, they might think it is the users fault, and may not help you.

Remember, anyone that tries to fix your computer, or exchange it out will look at everything on your hard drives (no matter what they say) they will see and know everything on your hard drive, porn, roids articles, pictures, personal etc etc. i'v known people who work at professional stores who have fixed problems, and kept computers a extra day just for amusement. just a heads up.

Well it appears that my hard drive died after 3 weeks.

Is that normal?

Yes, you weren't aware of this?
I replace my hard drive every 2nd week.

That is very comforting...LOL

I did not have much on there besides my favorites and a few songs/movies/games that I will have to find again.

But if the hard drive is gone, then they would have to go out of their way to find anything, right?

I had to get a new PC and I lost all of my info on the other PC

That's normal if it's a Maxtor drive.

I believe I called it when I mentioned that your hard drive probably has problems. :D

Where should I send the bill, 2T??

Also, get back on MSN, bro...
