What is the psychology behind remaining childless?

I finally got my vasectomy! Age 36 and engaged to a woman who says she may want a child someday, but knowing I won't; she understands the idea that both parents should WANT to have a child before bringing him/her into this world. So neither of us has a child. I just never had nor do I have any expectations of wanting a child. I have no particular interest in parenting, but fully support those who do (as long as it does not involve me).

I see no right or wrong in the choice, just not sure why I'm in the minority. Anyone want to play Dear Abby this morning??

You are a heartless bastard!!

just kidding...:D

I guess having a child is a big life decision, alot of responsibility behind it, and some people just can't handle that...however, I must warn you, if she's telling you she wants a child in the future, you're going to run into some problems...she may know that you don't want kids but this may affect her in the future when her "biological clock" starts ticking...be prepared!

studly, you're not alone...i am not having kids either. For me, it is just a concious choice I am making based on my own persoanl experiences and reasons. Kids are fine, but just not for me.

I DO NOT WANT CHILDREN BECAUSE I CAN NOT SETTLE DOWN. THAT, AND I WOULD TRAUMATIZE THE LITTLE ONES. BUT AT LEAST I ACKNOWLEDGE THIS. FAR SCARIER ARE THE PEOPLE WHO SHOULDN'T HAVE CHILDREN BUT STILL DO.

I'm selfish, immoral, intentionally irresponsible and often illegal. I prefer my hedonistic lifestyle and the non-ending pursuit to build my portfolio & my career and...I at least have enough intelligence (debatable?) to recognize this.

As a result, I have no right to bring a child into this world.

Later,

I am going to have as many kids as humanly possible so I can stay at home on welfare and live the good life.:D

The government pays you well if you have enough kids.

Studyly, you're only 36...why don't YOU tell us why you do not want children, that is if it's not too personal. You are only 36....and you are getting married to a woman who wants children, what makes you feel so certain you would not want them in the future? Or that you would never reconsider having them just because you love her so much? I hope this doesn't put a riff in your relationship years down the road. Do you not want children at all, or would you consider adopting? I am not being trying to be argumentative in any shape or form, I'd just like some insight.

Personally, I think that if both people in a marriage want to remain childless, I don't see anything wrong with that. In fact, I applaud them for not giving in to society's pressures on married couples who do not have children.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but are vasectomies reversible at all these days?

My sister is 29, she doesn't want any either. It freaks my grandma out bigtime, she just can't understand why a woman wouldn't want any. I myself understand the whole thing completely. I never used to want them. But now I could see 2 after I am married and well set in my profession. I say stick to your beliefs. If you don't want them, don't.
