What is "keylogger"?

Does anyone know what this is? I overheard some girls at lunch taking about checking out her husbands internet chating using "keylogger". Is this a program? How does it work? Apparently she was able to read both sides of their conversation. Thanks

So is the program on every computer? I get what it does..thanks..but not understanding where it comes from. In otherwords all the passwords I use, even though I don't safe them can be accessed by anyone using my computer?

a keylogger must be installed, it's not a default program at all


there are free trials online but not any free full versions I'm aware of

it should come up as a virus. But if it's installed by the user, antivirus will let it go as a legit program. There should be programs out there that let you know if you're being keylogged. It's nasty....someone can get all your fucking passwords and credit card numbers.

There are software ones like people described on this thread.

Be aware that there are also hardware ones. These look like little connectors or adapters that you put between your keyboard plug and the computer. The best ones are about 3/4 of an inch long and about one half an inch wide. You can install it in seconds, then just leave it on the person's computer. Every keystroke they type gets captured on the device. Then you retrieve it and install it on another computer. Once you type a secret password in, the keylogger regurgitates everything that was typed (you typically let it run in a word processor so you can capture the data).

Be aware that the hardware ones are 100% undetectable by any type of spyware or anti-virus software. You have to physically inspect the back of your machine to look for it.

Six months into my divorce, I found one that mysteriously showed-up on my computer. I immediately removed it and filed a police report. Turns-out, it's a class D felony here in the state of Tennessee -- I had fun with that

P.S. And don't get too cute with a hardware logger. The one used against me had an internal serial number that traced back to my ex's best friend. The police retrieved the order she made to the company, the credit card number she used, the UPS shipping information, and even a UPS proof of delivery showing where the guy left the device in her garage. In other words -- busted to hell and back.
