What drives you to train?

beachhead06

O.K. so I'm curious what is it that motivates you to train? What is it that keeps you coming back to the gym day in and day out? What motivates you to stick with your diet when you are tempted to cheat? Is there a certain habit, ritual, thing, you have to do before to work out?

Me personally, I try to keep my mind on my desire of being bigger and leaner. I still haven’t quite achieved my desire of a 6pack. Before and during my work out I try to piss myself off and make myself angry so I can use it as motivating energy.

So let’s hear it... :)

Well, I was in my best shape two years ago about.
Then a reckless free-base fiasco that lasted 9 months everyday felt like it took my soul and lungs. I was very sick, mental and physical.
Just starting to turn the corner and my heads really clearing up.

NOW my f----n sciatic nerve in my lower back and down my leg are killing me (alot stress related) making me miserable and craving painkillers to just make the pain go away. Oh BTW, before I was having a problem free basin, I was on heroin or snorting 3-4 80s a day. So narcotics are OUT for me.
So I want to go back to the gym, start out light with weights, cardio, and alot of stretching for my back. Start rebuilding my brain.

I need help or a swift kick in the ass.

someone throw me some tips
on how I should start out easy please
I'm not in good shape at all, I need a good 2 months of dieting and taking it easy in the gym before I "kill that shit"

What I need to do is order some protein and get a gym membership.
This week, if not today.
Nobody can help me but me.

Any tips or help would be appreciated

A long long time ago, I wanted to win the Olympia and score chicks at the beach. That's why I started to train.

Years later, I realized that I am never going to win the Olympia and I realized that my wife will never let me date those women that I 'score' at the beach. So, now I do it because of laziness.

Laziness because I'm now 'set' in my ways and just stick with it. I'm no longer trying to be the biggest dog on the block. Instead, I'm just trying new workouts and new diets. For example, I'm trying to switch to mainly body weight workouts for the remainder of the year.

Laziness because I don't really want to buy new clothes. If I got fatter, then I'd have to change my entire wardrobe.

Laziness because I 'trained' myself to eat for macros and not really for taste. Most of the time, I eat food that works from a macronutrient ratio, but people around me always say 'wtf'? For example, this month, I'm eating tuna, mayo, hot sauce, and sugar peas for every meal.

i hate how i look when i don't have decent size and cuts, so the knowledge that I will have to face myself in the mirror drives me to stick with my diet and training

Hmm, well without knowing much about you I would say that you should start with a simple reduced calorie diet and cardio. This will help to improve your indurance and get you in the right mind for training.

You could always start with the pink dumbells ;)

Off and on for the last 25 years. I prefer being stronger. If I could figure out how not to be injured that would be the icing on the cake.

The hardest part is getting the motivation back to recover and get started again. It reminds me a lot of quiting smoking each time.

Injury, rest, eat, get lazy (3-30 months), think about exercise 2-3 months, start again, get joints back in working order ( 3 months ), add weight ( 6-18 months), reinjure...

Repeat.

It may not be the best recipe and it won't get you any prizes but it is what it is. After a basic SS routine this year I may give a Crossfit routine a try. I want to see if I can injure something different for a change. So far my favourites are shoulder and elbow tendonitis and back injuries with minor leg tweaks and bicep pulls being a distant third.

Good luck,
-Bob

That helps me to stay on track, maybe being a little narcissist is good...

i don't think wanting to look a certain way is narcissistic. If you care about the way something like your sofa looks, why not also strive for a body that you enjoy the sight of

True, true, I suppose narcissist might be too strong of a word. I see nothing wrong with enjoying and critiquing what I see in the mirror.

Train, only if I am the conductor and can go first. Nah kidding. I believe it's a mindset thing. You body feels good, so you feel better about yourself. Maybe its just one of them personal things since everyone is different. Today I am in a strange mood forgive me please.

I don't want to be like everyone else. Look around you. Look at your neighbors, your friends, your coworkers... people walking down the street... they're all fat and out of shape. Sure they have great excuses why they don't workout. Some are even believable... Every single one of them has a weight set in their garage or basement collecting dust. Everyone lies to themselves why they're not working out.

I'm not those people. Quite frankly, I'm better than that.

Sorry to be so blunt. There, I've said it.

Where's my fucking karma?

I think of "hot gym girl"
She's a girl that trains and now works at my gym. She is the sexiest girl ever. I think of her body and when I get to the gym and see her, I work out harder
Now my friend joined my gym and he goes to see her.
All gyms need a "hot gym girl"

Are you sure you're not gay?

Same here. Plus I enjoy it. It is my way of getting away from it all and just letting it all out. Mentally it has done wonders for me. I've been lifting since I was in my early teens and I'll lift (God wiling) until I hit the grave.

K to you. Thanks for being real and blunt!

I love that line... :)

i started kickboxing when i was about 14 because i got bullied hard, and found out that i was actually quite good at it (loys of bullies got there arses kicked after that lol) i spent the next few years doing strength training and intense cardio. at this point i weighed 140. by the time i was 18 i was fighting at 170. i have slowly made my way to 185, i have awful trouble putting on wait and keeping it.
i am taking a break from fighting at the moment, maybe a year or so, possibly to come back at 205. i do a lot of strength training, but unlike powerlifters i do care what i look like. i think the thing that drives me to train is that i dont want to settle for just being average. i want to be different-stronger, quicker, tougher, leaner

But I think women are motivated by other women

Women motivate me to train. You would think if men saw a guy with huge muscles, they would want to "look like that" and train hard etc... but it is when I see a hot chick that I get very motivated to train.

I say to myself- If I'm that attracted to the female "fitness" chick, then women must be somewhat attracted to men being physically fit.

Not sure that made sense, but fuck it.

The fact that one day I will be up there in terms of Quality and over all Look ( not mass)

I can see that. But I don't think women check out beefy dudes and think, yeah I want to go work out.
We have "other" thoughts about the beefy dudes...haha

Im motivated by good looking girls and guys. For girls I say to myself I want to be able to get a girl like her so I train to get the looks. For guys I critique them silently and decided what I need to improve.

Yes, I agree. That is what I meant in my post. If we men are "attracted" to those women, then women, to some degree will be attracted to the "fit" men as well.

"attracted", not 'inspires to workout' or anything.

Sure, men are the physical type and women are more emotional or whatever, but i don't buy that 100%. When my wife comes home from a male strip club all hot and horny, and ready to pounce, it isn't from her "emotions" being stimulated. It's physical baby!!!

Don't lie.

I also see the married womens at my kids' preschool checking out the muscles from the corner of their eye. Are they thinking "pfft, he doesn't have a six pack like my husband"? Not sure what they're thinking. I'd love to ask sometime.

Women are just like men to an extent.

I used to be very skinny when I was younger. I am 6'1 and for most of of life weighed around 145lbs. Since those days I am up a good 40 lbs of muscle. The thought of shrinking back to my old self keeps me hitting the iron. I'd love to be a lean 200lbs, but I just don't think it's in my genetics to do so.
