What are you selling?

Why do you hate it?

How much money can one make doing it (working 8-9 hours/day)?

I setup up networks for places like hosiptals and shit.. I dont mind it.. I would rather be running my own whore house

I've been working for myself for a long time now, agricultural chemicals, commercial warehousing, propane distribution, pest control and lawn and garden supplies, all under one company name, my dad started the businesses 30 years ago and just kept adding as he saw a need. I started the bonding business 12 years ago.
I like all of them, the bonding is my baby so I'm kind of partial to it, the others are good businesses, especially if your the boss, that makes a big difference. I've lived in Dallas and Houston, now I live in a town that has 3 stoplights, driving across town is a 5 minute drive and I grew up here so I know virtually everyone.
If I had to change jobs now, seeing that plastic surgeon is kind of out of the question, I'd look at buying or working at a service industry, .i.e. AC/ Heat, plumbing, computers, that is where the $$ are imo....

Yeah, and I am gonna talk to you about something for your opinion (don't you feel all important now?). If I don't get to it soon, then when we go get pizza I'll hit you up.

I’m a product designer mostly UI/Visual design and do all my prototyping with Flash for testing in usability and lab controlled environments. Almost everyone on this board has used at least two of the major projects I have been a designer on. I love my job, it’s fun and rewarding plus I make bank since no one knows actionscript. We test the products in flash then they get sent off to software design engineers like Java to build =).

I also design tats for fun in hopes of selling them someday.

Selling geomembranes, all flavors.

I wish I had only 8-9 hours to work. it is 24/7 usually get ynday off but often there is a meeting or work lunch/dinner, etc.

I am just not wired to be a cubicle monkey/kiss-ass/salesman.

I love the oilfield, being out in the patch or on the road. Sitting in front of a computer in an office is not work. It is like life support for the walking dead. I hate it.

With a salary and 10% sales commission I could make a ton of cash. I can make more in the patch and enjoy it though.

Any time bro. Pizza for sure - life will calm down a "little" for me in about 2 weeks, so we'll do it up.

I  stupid ebay but sometimes it doesn't love back!

Christmas was awesome for me and I got burnt out.

TArget for $39.99
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270191659905

Costco for $79.99, sold around 10 of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270194285170

These were purchased off ebay for my DD who they did not fit $10
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270188347722

Anyway, those are a few examples. I just got tired of dragging my kids around from store to store and to garage sales. I actually quit shopping now and just need to list my other junk on hand or return it to the store. My ebay store is pathetic! LOL!

Wow, I think I know you! Growing up in Dimmitt Texas (panhandle) we were always getting busted by the cops for hanging out in parking lot of a business like yours. Of course, our friend's dad owned it and he had the key so we would just go inside until his parents found out. Then we had to go to someone's field...until that person's dad flew over with a crop duster and ran us off. Ahhh...gotta love growing up in agriculture. :qt:

i hate shopping and ebay. fuck just the thought of going through all that is working my nerves.

I love what I do. I manage the Customer Service Operations for an MBHO. We manage the mental health and substance abuse benefits for employer groups (Harley Davidson, Motorola, DOW chemical to name a few), healthplans (Coventry Healthcare, Destiny Healthcare, HMO of Illinois, etc), Unions (UFCW, Teamsters, etc).

I manage 14 CSR-types as well as 2 CSR supervisors. My boss wants me to eventually be the VP of Operations. lol

Good question, I was wondering the samething... Have any good jumper stories?

And how big are Dogs wifes tits?

I run an semi-automated machine with a big blade. It's ok, pretty laid back and relaxed atmosphere, and convenient because I live close by. I get to do pull ups on a tow strap I slung over the frame of a mobile crane in my work area, which I consider a bonus.

I graduated with a BAA and want to do something independent in the future related to multimedia. I always found it tough to pinpoint what I wanted to do, and picking something in school was always a convoluted chore for me. Money and status are second to enjoying what I do, as long as I can pay the bills and have a little fun money. I ultimately want to be doing something I don't see as work for a living, and figure the money will come as a bonus from my enthusiastic efforts.

I am a RN in a local hospital.

Yea I love it most days but we are unappreciated by a lot of people. People use us as a fucking clinic for the fucking sniffles. Which is fine but if you have to wait 4-5 hours so fucking what.

So what if a personis having a heart attack you want your fucking cough syrub which medi-cal/we are paying for.

If you want "free" walk up healthcare then fucking waith your GOD DAMN TURN. Sorry

I love true emergency medicine. When we have a pt coming in with an ischemic stroke and we give them TPA/clot buster and watch thier neuro deficits change right before your eyes. Fucking amazing!!! I could tell ya more but I am sure no one wants to hear about it right now.

I did what you do for a little while too. I loved being in the trauma room. I would've stayed in medical field, but everything you say is correct. Also, it was like being in highschool again (maybe even Jr High). And the politics...sheesh.

I loved it and hated it. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm saying.

I'm thinking about medical sales of some type. But who knows. I'd like to have something I was in control of...but, I've owned businesses before, and there are good and bad things about that too.

I really need to hit the friggin powerball (too bad I never play), or write a hit song, or bestseller book, etc. and sit back and collect royalties. I'm ready to be done working and just do what I want, when I want, with whom I want...with money being no object.

I should write some Harry Potter type shit and become a billionaire too!!

And JAVAGURU, I did comment on your job. It's a skillset I don't have. Not sure I could do it either. I probably don't have the attention span needed. :(

lol@ female nurse.

Well it is not near as stressful as taking care of patients that know they are gunna get better and walk out of there.

People in Hospice generally are at peace with what is happenning. They are much more pleasent to deal with. I have taken care of many patients in the ICU and on the regular floor that are dying and know it. I loved taking care of those guys.

I can almost always handle a dying patient. it is the family that gets me when they are balling and crying.

This is not meant be racisits at all but the worst family to have around when someone in thier family dies are the middle eastern and black people. They are loud and the mourning is very annoying but you gotta let them.

I predict 2-3 years solid before we really start to pull out of this. I was most recently a lender. Great money while it lasted. Will be great again, but I don't want to go through the 2-3 years of shit (not a good time for me to do that right now) before it comes back. And, I wasn't having fun at it for the last year either. I'm done doing shit I'm not going to have fun with anymore.

i enjoy helping people. since i just been focused on helping my clients and giving them good service, nothing but good shit has happened.

yeah the market is different, but you adapt. adapt or die.

can still make six digits if you hustle, easily......not as easy as the past few years, but shit is cyclical. the more people that drop outta the business, the easier it is for me to sell loans. and truthfully, i'm killing it right now. despite rates going insane the last 2-3 days

I'm currently semi-retired (quit my job to take some time for myself)

I was an exploration Geologist for an unconventional natural gas company. Worked 80-100 hours per week, travelled for months at a time, and got paid pretty well. But money doesn't mean shit if you don't have time to enjoy it.

Cheers,
Scotsman

I am a private placement professional. I am directly responsible for finding investors for our company. Lotta hours but I am in a position where I get to help a great many people and the pay-out will be GREAT when the company gets bought out/goes public. And if I choose, I can do it all over again someplace else. But I just may retire. We shall see when that time comes. :)

I worked in the medical research field for 8 yrs, then left that to open a renovation biz.
I walked away from that 8 yrs ago and got a job as a Material Buyer. Basically, I was buying all the metals and material to build valves for the US Navy, Pulp & Paper and Gas industries. I was then moved into MRO Buying (machine parts) for the same company.
I don't love the job simply because I don't like being stuck in an office.
Right now I'm not working (on disability) because I got a boo-boo :-)

I've always thought bail bondsman looked fun (like Dog, lol). How much time do you spend chasin the bail jumpers though? Is it dangerous? Do you pray with them and then offer them a smoke? :p

well, it has it's times when it's dangerous, but most of the time it's just locate them and go get them, they don't resist, they will hide in the house though and not come out, that's when you just never know whats on the other side of the door. Before I had a family and was younger, it was alot more fun chasing peeps and shit, squabbling on the floor/ ground, etc. You never want to get into a fight, so you go in with the idea that if he has a gun, I'll have 2, or if you know he likes to fight, take some guys who live to fight, they hope he resists just so they can. At 48, now I use the police/ sheriff on most of my cases, they don't locate them but will arrest them if I know where they are. It goes on their daily activity sheets that they made an arrest, so they dig that.
But just as you see on Dog, as a person who has lived a life around drugs/alcohol, after you catch them, thee is a feeling of compassion that I get. Most are just so f'd on drugs, they aren't bad people, just sick people, so, Yes, I do share with them my experiences and how they can get the help. So, Dog is a TV show, but parts are real, depending on the bondsman, it can be damn close or just BS, in my case, pretty accurate....
Lots of stories to tell, way to many for me to hunt and peck on here, I'll write one sometimes. Like, the time I had a baby boy in the car and saw a girl that I was chasing, out of habbit I bolted after her, over some fences, through some allys. Just as I remembered that my 2 year old was left unattended in an unlocked car! LMAO

Cheers,
Scotsman

I agree with you. When you go back to work will you do the same thing? If you do something different will you stay in the same field?

I am a private placement professional. I am directly responsible for finding investors for our company. Lotta hours but I am in a position where I get to help a great many people and the pay-out will be GREAT when the company gets bought out/goes public. And if I choose, I can do it all over again someplace else. But I just may retire. We shall see when that time comes. :)

Now that sounds like something I'd enjoy! Especially if I got to retire after hitting it big on the pay-out!!

How'd you land that gig? Had you done it or something like it in the past?

I worked in the medical research field for 8 yrs, then left that to open a renovation biz.
I walked away from that 8 yrs ago and got a job as a Material Buyer. Basically, I was buying all the metals and material to build valves for the US Navy, Pulp & Paper and Gas industries. I was then moved into MRO Buying (machine parts) for the same company.
I don't love the job simply because I don't like being stuck in an office.
Right now I'm not working (on disability) because I got a boo-boo :-)

Damn lady! You've done a lot of things. Why'd you leave the medical research field? That sounds interesting.

Renovation business? My sister does that, but it's still unusual for a female. Were you doing the actual work, or did you sub it out? My sister does almost all of it herself. She likes it.

Funny, your story is similar to hers although in a different order. She went to school to become a pharmacist (actually wanted to be a MD/PharmD and have her own clinic and pharmacy). Somewhere along the way that got sidetracked and she had to work full time. She was working at a Radio Shack and they made her a manager. She left that to become a buyer for an electronics distributor. She left that because she was having a baby and wanted to be with her kid. She started building/repairing computers and networks. She made a bad business decision and lost a bunch of money in that, and was just sick of it at that point so she started her renovation/remodeling company.

Definitely won't do the same thing. As much fun as the oilfield is I just don't want to spend that much time working. I really don't know what I want to do yet, I've been off work for almost three months now and still enjoying it. It's been very nice to be able to make and keep plans, hit the gym, see family and friends, etc...

I'm an investment analyst at a corporate finance consulting firm. I work with private equity firms, investment banks, and hedge funds that need an independent 3rd party to value illiquid debt and equity investments on a quarterly basis. In short, I'm a numbers geek. :insane: The pay is generous, I like the people I work with, and it's fun when the transactions I read about in the Wall Street Journal end up on my desk for review. That said, the work can vary from really fascinating to incredibly tedious and boring. On the whole, I'm happy.

i'm a cpa and i have a masters degree in taxation. . .i'm also certified in business valuation and forensic accounting. . .tax season (although quite profitable) gets to be kind of a drag. . .however, litigation support work is the fastest growing part of my business. . .i do business valuations/forensic accounting/damage calculations, etc. and then testify about the work in court for divorces, shareholder disputes, partner disputes, insurance claims, etc. . .that work is very profitable, plus i LOVE sitting in the witness chair answering questions about what i do for a living. . .and i love to hear the sound of my own voice. . .so. . .yeah. . .i enjoy what i do :nerd:

Sounds like you've done well in carving out a great niche for yourself! Mr. expert witness!! Do you think this part of the business may take over the entire business and you'll no longer be doing individual returns one day?

I'm a self employed medical transcriptionist, I don't know if I LIKE it, but it suits me (essentially, I'm a highly antisocial, opinionated, individualist and dealing with other people on a regular basis is exhausting to me).

Doctors (in my case generally neurologists, neurosurgeons and orthopedists) dictate reports after they see a patient and I'm the person who types those dictations. I work for an agency, so I don't have to deal with asshole doctors (they are almost always assholes).

Negatives: Pay is utter shit (I call it getting paid by the pound), I get zero benefits, I'm absolutely alone for at least 10 hours a day.

Pluses: I make my own hours, I can take as much time off as I like as long as I don't mind not getting paid, I never need to leave the house, I'm absolutely alone for at least 10 hours a day (unless you count the cats), and I can decorate my office any fucking way I want to and stress is virtually nil.

I was an executive secretary for about 10 years before this. If you don't count lack of benefits I'm grossing close to what I was then and I'm a much calmer/happier person overall.

I'm about ready to kill myself an accounant, we agreed to a fucking 30 day billing cycle and I got a fuck you we'll pay you in 90; I want my money bitches!!

Oh well, I'll get my money in 45 days after the hard coded bomb I put in their application, in case this occurred, goes off and they have to manually process all those purchase orders.

If things work out the way they are projected (and there is no real reason why they shouldnt) then I will be able to retire quite nicely in bout 5 years. I am now 40.

I learned this industry from my husband who has been in many different types of businesses over the course of his professional life.

How'd I land the gig? Interesting circumstances as ya'll know I have no college degree and only real world experience with my current husband. We had our own consulting company. My hubby had been working closely with the company where we are now employed. I had been driving him too and from work when he leg was broken and the CEO and CFO were asking if my husband had any more ideas on how they could increase productivity in this area. I was just standing there because I was the Old Grump's chauffer LOL. I told my hubby, "You should really tell them do this, this and this." He said, "I am not telling them jack schitt. YOU TELL THEM."

So I did. They liked what they heard and said, "Thanks for all your help." To which I replied, "Don't thank me till you get my bill." :D So I wrote up a proposal on how I could improve the department and the rest is history.

I swear to God, it was like something out of a movie. :)

Big baller! :chomp: Sounds pretty cool. How much schooling did you have to complete for that? What certifications do you have?

I've got a non-business, liberal arts undergraduate degree and then a master's in finance. My company is big into the certifications thing, so I'm pursuing the CFA (i.e. Chartered Financial Analyst) designation. I just passed the Level 1 exam and will take Level 2 in June. There are 3 fun-filled levels in all! :p

Is there any way to make more money doing this type of work? Can't you get benefits through your husband (you're married, right?)? Sounds like you wouldn't trade the pluses to get rid of the negatives. Something to be said about being your own boss.

Yes it does. Seriously...that is cool. I imagine you must've just projected such confidence that they thought, "oh shit we better snap her up before someone else (competition) does!"

Nice work BM.

You're just wasting your time and energy if you don't enjoy it at all. It's hard to build relationships when you don't like who you're talking to or feel unappreciated.

i'll probably only be doing corporate and partnership returns this year. . .and maybe a couple/few of our larger ($10 million plus in assets) individual clients. . .i have court dates scheduled for each month during tax season and i have 5 or 6 other projects that i haven't even started yet. . .and another half dozen that i have proposals out on but haven't received any information for yet. . .thank God i broke down and hired another professional last year. . .

Here's an idea. You should totally become an "efficiency expert." See clip below: it's one of my favorites. Maybe it just cracks me up because I'm a business school geek . . . I dunno. :p
