What do you do, and do you LIKE it?

meh. . .you could have chosen to be an actuary. . .they have like 12 tests to pass in all and most people don't pass them all until they're like fitty. . .that's friggin' crazy. . .

I have a personality that is comparatively more engaging than a 2x4. I, therefore, cannot be an actuary. :artist:

:) If I ever sell any I'll keep that in mind. Can you imagine a question from a buyer about combined shipping for a some used kids clothes and porn, lol! :p

Oh well, I'll get my money in 45 days after the hard coded bomb I put in their application, in case this occurred, goes off and they have to manually process all those purchase orders.

Have you ever put an easter egg in any of your projects?

Started working in accounting as a processor.

2 degrees later I became an intern in the I.T. department supporting finance and accounting.

Then I became a Programmer Analyst, basically implimenting reporting solutions for Finance and Accounting.

Now I manage a team of 6 people who do what I used to do.

Do I like it? Not sure if I'd say like, I get some sort of satisfaction out of it. I like the paycheck and I definitely do not hate what I do.

I'm not passionate about it and I wouldn't say it fulfills me but it allows me to do a lot of things in life that I enjoy.

Here's an idea. You should totally become an "efficiency expert." See clip below: it's one of my favorites. Maybe it just cracks me up because I'm a business school geek . . . I dunno. :p

I actually like that idea. My wife talks to me about her company and I just shake my head at how inefficient they are, but because they are still profitable, they don't care that they have 10 people now doing the same work that one person used to do...and those 10 are complaining about how busy they are and need to off load parts of their work!!!

So what does the future hold for Lestat? You gonna stay with the company till you get the gold watch? Or, do you have any other ambitions?

Damn lady! You've done a lot of things. Why'd you leave the medical research field? That sounds interesting.

Renovation business? My sister does that, but it's still unusual for a female. Were you doing the actual work, or did you sub it out? My sister does almost all of it herself. She likes it.

Funny, your story is similar to hers although in a different order. She went to school to become a pharmacist (actually wanted to be a MD/PharmD and have her own clinic and pharmacy). Somewhere along the way that got sidetracked and she had to work full time. She was working at a Radio Shack and they made her a manager. She left that to become a buyer for an electronics distributor. She left that because she was having a baby and wanted to be with her kid. She started building/repairing computers and networks. She made a bad business decision and lost a bunch of money in that, and was just sick of it at that point so she started her renovation/remodeling company.

I have done a lot but none of it was planned. I should have been very smart and from school went into my Dad's successful building biz.
But yeah, I left the medical research biz for two reasons, I wanted to start my own biz and because the company was cutting down my pay.

I started the renovation co with my ex. I used my savings to buy the trucks and tools and I got all the clients. My ex would do most of the physical work. I worked on a few jobs when extra help was needed. So I retiled bathrooms, put up walls, layed cement and paving stones etc.
Was a stressful job, but was good money.
Then when the relationship with my ex ended, I got the buyers job.

wow, phramacy shcool and she is now renovating........crazy how life never goes as planned.
Renovations is a fulfilling carreer, but the clients can be brutal.
I will work for myself again and next time I'm hoping it's going to be in the natural health care field.

3D drafting and design for oil field equipment... CSB's, derricks, electrical, mechanical, etc... Besides dealing with the engineer whom I basically have to baby sit and clean up after i really enjoy what I do. I get out in the field and have some hands on from time to time. I'm currently working my way up from a level 4 to a top level 5 in the company (in my field).

I also do home plans and other misc contract work... piping, electrical, etc...

I enjoy my work, however would not take a job where I am limited to just sitting behind a desk... I have to be able to actually touch and understand each and every part i design and model... i have to have some field time, understanding of every project I work on. I refuse to work under any other condition.

Totally agree about the hands on field time. That would make it good for me too. Take that away and I'd be gone. Sounds like you got a good gig! :)

i've been in this field for 8 years and have no regrets... i've learned so much in so little time. It is really sweet when you see 'your' project come togther, from cutting to fitting to welding then assembly and out to the paint shop and then shipping. I am still waiting on certification to go offshore and see all these things working. i've been on derricks that are at the ship yard but not recently on ones that are working wells. We have projects all over... it would be sweet to visit Egypt ....... i'd love that

Yes, i would have to agree, i work under two great supervisors and have some wonderful coworkers... never a dull moment in the office. And my job can be exciting at times, its all what you extract from it.

now spin instuctor..personal trainer...and membership sales.....

I get paid to workout so I love it...hate the money

Wow...therapist ( "I'll take 'The rapist' for $400, Alex" ) heh...bet you've never heard that one before huh? :)

So you love what you do, but you hate the money. Yet, you could go back to being a therapist and make better money. I take it you didn't enjoy being a therapist?

Either way, you're helping people so they're both rewarding.

Which one of those positions do you think you've been more effective at (in helping people)? And, why?

If I didn't workout, I could see potential for becoming depressed easier, worrying more, etc.

I've had a lot of people tell me I should be a trainer. I might enjoy that, but I'd get frustrated if someone didn't do what I told them to do. I trained a buddy once and he refused to do deadlifts. He would'nt eat like I told him, he wouldn't push himself and if I tried to put on more weight than last time (on an exercise) he would whine and say he couldn't. He just resisted me every step of the way and then complained about how he wasn't getting any bigger. I stopped training him.

Career wise? No other ambitions really. Careers are generall all about making some other rich people richer. Do I want to risk everything and try something for myself for little to no reward? Not really, but I keep my eyes open for opportunities.

I have no idea, I sell my expertise and compete against people living in India and China. I feel no shame in playing the race card because I speak fluent English and you can call me anytime you want; I can't compete on wage.

I would have committed suicide. My wife's aunt would have hired me at Arthur Anderson, she was a hiring partner, back in 1998. I would have chosen a slow death instead. :)

So you're a tax atty and your wife controls all the money in the family and give you a meager $50 allowance? Ha! Sure. It's funny though.

Glad you love what you do. Maybe one day it might be helpful for me to know you. ;)

Site Operations Manager

I do enjoy the challenges.

The work environment is only slightly more tolerable than HELL.

The upper management level deserve nothing but disgust and contempt with a few worthy exceptions.
