I think what turns people off from this music genre in general, besides its reputation, is that there really is lots of crap and disharmonic noise in the scene. One really has to be able to differentiate the talent from the crap. The problem here is that it's all considered underground, thus the shit band recording on a 4-track in their basement is as easy to find and hear as the quality stuff put out by actual musicians. Only by magazines/fanzines and word of mouth is one able to find what's good out there. Personally, I won't buy something (with very few exceptions) that I haven't heard or read about from a trusted source. Luckily, the internet and boards like this make it easier. Flah from the music board has introduced me to a lot of new stuff (I've been out of the scene since '01), and we traded a couple discs through mail and such (since I'm computer illiterate and don't have any Kazaa or online music program or anything).
i dont like all punk thats for sure,i like a few select songs by a few select artists, most of the stuff im into is covers for the most part, and old punk like rancid and sex pistols, this new shit really isnt punk metric is real close to old punk though
Classic Bad Religion is one of the few punk bands I absolutely love. Suffer and No Control are godly, and Stranger Than Fiction is still one of my favorites.
That, and Greg Graffin has a PhD from the Ivy League school Cornell. (Although his dissertation, comparitably speaking, is a joke... I still give him props for doing the whole B.S. UCLA, M.S. somewhere and PhD Cornell while doing Bad Religion at the same time.)
