Well we're building.....

a house. The wife and I got the approval from the bank to build our dream home, so now the fun begins. Or should I say the headaches? I sure hope everything goes smoothly, but I'm sure Murphy's Law will be present. Any tips from you that may have gone through this before?

Hire a very good contractor. Don't cut corners and I hope your marriage survives. :) Good luck.

I hope it survives too, but so far we are in pretty much in agreement in what we want. We decided to hire a GC/Builder instead of contracting it out ourselves. I know we'll pay more, but I don't have the time to oversee it all, plus we get a better rate from the bank with a GC.

Move far, far away and come back when it is finished. I wish you luck though!
You are going need it!

Then you just need to lay out the materials used in buidling with the GC and you should be set to go. The only thing after that will be if any issues arise during construction on site. We did the GC thing ten years ago.

Sold that house five years later. LOL!!!

Make frequent if not daily stops by the site and let the Bastards know you are checking up on every stage from the Foundation pour'ers to the Block layers thru plumbing, Especially the Insulation and Plumbing...

After the drywall goes up, you won't know Jack about what's behind it......

Did you have a bad experience?

Not in building a new house but have in the addition to our present house. Pick your GC carefully. Know for sure who the GC uses for services he provides ie. bricklayers, cement finishers, plumbers. electricians, etc. Those guys make the GC look good or bad! There is good and bad in all GC's IMO. Some GC's get so busy with so many projects they start neglecting some of them. Don't let him pick you to neglect. Tell him up front what you expect and what you will not tolerate. Kind of "cover all your bases" so to speak. Good luck!

Hi, me again. How many sq ft is it? I have two guys near you that could save you cash. One guy is HVAC(heat) and the other is Electrical. My cement guy is up here though or I could really help you out. I can PM their numbers if you're interested. Which county are you building in?
