weight lifting as a teenager?

New member
is there any point in weight lifting while im still a teenager, since my muscles are just going to grow anyway?

Im only 15 and Ive been lifting for about 10 months now (although the first couple months were just pussyfootin around). In that amount of time Ive totally transformed my body. Before I lifted I was skinny as fuck, like an anorexic bitch, even tho I ate like a goddam horse.

how much of a teenager. theres a lot of difference between a 13 year old and a 19 year old. if you are 13 or 14 id say hold off at least until your a freshman in high school. in the mean time read up on proper form and get yourself acquainted with things like nutrition and training routines so youll be one step ahead of the game. start light and get the form down, your muscles will thank you for it in the end.

im 16 but im right about in the middle of puberty, im kind of a late bloomer. but still, what im asking is will weight lifting make my muscles grow any faster or larger than they would grow anyway? how would i know if my gains are actually coming from the training or if they would have come naturally?

take the advice of these guys, start light, nail out proper form. you're in a great position now, because you've got no bad habits to break as far as performing different exercises. performing exercises properly is either going to make you or break you, literally, as improper form can lead to injury. good luck and start off slow and easy, you've got many years ahead of you to build and grow.

i think my light weightlifting as a young teen helped to build my frame into what it is now, and i only got into it on and off over the years until just a few months ago when i started getting serious. best of luck to you, and from the few short weeks i've been surfing and posting on this site, i've found everyone to be excellent in terms of advice and knowledge. stick around here, these guys and gals will help you out tremendously.

Also, your testosterone levels will never be as high as they are now...apparently most of the bone mass you'll retain in life will come from 4 years around puberty...so use it to your advantage. Just start light and be careful, your body is still developing...Trust me...any gains will be coming from the training. People can still be twigs at 20-30...I didn't notice a lot of muscle change going through puberty...maybe because it was so gradual. (I just turned 18 last month, started training at late 17's). The training definately accelerated my growth based on how I was growing before I was training.

To avoid pemature growth plate closure, stick with the light weights. Stay in a range where you can get 10-15 reps, and concentrate on your form.

premature growth plate closure?

and around what age is it safe to go heavy?

Each person is different, some people mature earlier than others. The main thing is to use good form on any of your movements. Start off light and work your way up. If you have a regular doctor or you have to get a physical to play a sport, ask your doctor. They should be able to answer any questions you have about your own personal case.
