This is an excerpt from the latest issue of Powerlifting USA (Mar 2005):

May 22nd "The Atlantis 2005 New England Bench Press Classic"

(No bench shirts or cheat gear allowed)

"Special invite for Gene Rychlak Jr.
I will pay all your travel and hotel expenses as well as waive all entry fees. In fact I'll pay you to enter, you claim to be the strongest bencher in the world (1000+) rumor has it you can't budge 600 pounds without a shirt.
You say you are the best in the world, take off you cheat gear and prove it."

Rules: 1. No Bench Shirts or wraps 2. All lifts are done with a pause etc

The ad is unsigned, but you can look below it and find this meet is hosted by 12 time World Champion Ed Coan phone# 508-885-3686.

I will never take anything away from Ed Coan's accomplishments as he is one of the strongest powerlifters to live. i respect his lifts and accomplishments. HOWEVER, this type of hyprocrisy (coan wore a single ply shirt when he competed) and to blatantly call out someone and to belittle their accomplishments is unbelievably disrepectful. We need everyone we can get to support weightlifting/powerlifting. the last thing we need is one of the sports greats tearing down a fellow competitor. my respect for ed coan has greatly diminished

i am asking everyone who reads this to boycott this event and any other that belittles other lifters and their accomplishments. please support the federations that are for the lifters and benefit the sport

I'm shocked he wrote/endorses that. I've watched some of his lifts on the net. Shocked my balls to no extent. When money speaks, people tend to do anything. Look at Conseco. It's a shame

Soon enough Gary R. will call Coan out with a full-gear challenge. They'll have two seperate events, Fox and NBC will be beating each other up to get TV rights; they'll sell the DVDs and make millions and there'll be no decisive winner so they can do it all again next year.

Just wait for when someone comes on stage with a full-body motorized exo-skeleton and lifts a total weight of ten or twenty tons. There'll be a whole new line of 'Active Gear'.

the ad was not by ed coan. it is from a guy named bruce something, he is promoting it, he promotes strongman too, he is putting up decent cash, but the guy hates gear. did you happen to see big gene's response to it? LOL if not go to his forum and check it out.

here is big genes reply. http://www.rychlakpowersystems.com/reply.htm

all i have to say is their is a federation for everyone..if you hate gear/double ply then you lift in single ply and EVRYONE uses single ply..its not like you compete against someone in double ply unless you make that decision to use single where double is allowed..

all this bickering is just stupid and bad for the sport..i cant believe they allowed that ad in PLUSA..pretty shameful to attack another lifter like that..assholes

Good call, this has been on the net for a few days now. I hope no one posted these words as coans anywhere else, as i have never heard a bad word about the guy from anyone who met him.

I don't really care about the bickering and nonsense as much as i care about my paycheck, meaning this is just my hobby, so most of it makes me laugh. I will say this though, when powerlifting ditches the bench shirt, you will see people care much more about thier raw benches, period.

thats not going to happen anytime soon...
with new shirts like the rage's i think your gonna see benches increase jsut like squats..years ago 800 was a milestone let alone a 1k squat..now 800 is a joke hell im almost there that should tell you something lol..higher benches will become the norm even in single ply gear
