Watches!!!

Been awhile, I've missed you all. Realized watches are rarely discussed here.

I really like breitlings designs... rolex's movement... but looking for something new.

Looking at hublot and a few other smaller brands
What do you all like?

I've been looking at fine watches recently. I have a couple of Movados and a Tag but their kind of like mid-fi if you compare to audio. A truly fine watch would be automatic movement and limited edition.
I'm looking at these now: IWC, Longines, Bell and Ross, Audemars Piguet, etc.

I like a rolex.....brands come and go...but a rolex...i prefer the stainless sub, looks good on everyone. I think tags are corny.

btw, i agree about tags... I feel like they are overpriced diesel watches.

I have the bell and ross "instrument", gets a lot of wow, but a bit gigantic...

currently in the process of getting a cool daytona, will be my first rolex. Always thought they were well engineered but boring. Maybe I'm just getting boring now too!

I'm a big Tag fan. Hate Rolexes... look too gawdy for me. Give me a nice, simple Tag... nothing like a reliable watch!

Of course I can't compare it to the official government issued Ironman watch. HAHA

Can't beat a stainless sub-mariner,it's a classic and looks good at work or play ,

gold subs make it look like your trying to hard, also the explorer with white face is nice to.

I dont think you can put a watch like a Tag or Oakley(Quartz movement) in the same catagories as the other watches being mentioned here. Those watches are more of a designer piece rather than a time piece. I think the cheapest you can get into a nice watch with good movement is Oris. That being said, I do love the Oakley watches, but would never own one at that price(Most Quartz movements should be well under $400)

Thank you Timanator- There are the seikos, guess, citizens....

then up one is the Tag's, Omegas, MOvado's (very played out IMHO, and people that sport these think they are better than they really are)

THen the at least go with an Oris, IWC, Brietling, Baume & Mercier, Panerai and so on the list goes forever. I like Tag but certainly not in the same league or even close...

Right now I like the Mont Blanc watches, cartier movements and internals, and their designs are nice, and coming up.

I dont like watches you can find in every mall, discount place and so on...

I saw that!!!! haha, a nice Breitling Bentley model..I was like WTF? hey if it saves $$ which I'm sure it does, go for it!

lol wonder if they honor the same return policy for 5k watches lol... just switch watches every few months....

I use my cellphone instead. Dont like watches. But if I ahd to buy one, I'd go with something not too bling bling (Tag Heur most likely).

that's just it, tag is the EPITOME of bling just for bling, all form no function, right up there with movado. The only watch in tag's lineup that is tolerable looking is the carrera chrono anyway. You'd be better served going with a low end oris or tissot if you didn't want too too bling.

What do you think about Omegas ? They look classy without convince everyone that it isnt a fake watch you bought on Canal Street...

Omegas aren't bad, I'd still go for an oris or tissot though, I feel like omegas lack the styling of higher end models. If you wanted to stick with TAG, Get a carrera. If you want breitling, I'd go to ebay as their resale drops a lot. You could get a superocean for under 1k. Omega, I'd probably get the speedmaster chrono if I were forced to get one. They are well built though, I will give you that. If you want a very cool watch with a killer price, go for a gevril gv2 auto chrono on ebay. Those are some of my fav old watches, just basic w/ nice movement and classic styling.

This is a fun watch, that in my opinion presents a serious value at any price under 1200: It recently went unsold on ebay... tsk tsk

I recently treated myself to a Tommy Bahama watch. Pretty big face but casual with a leather band. I love it for going out but wouldn't wear it to do work in or anything rough. Just something to relax while wearing

funny thing, I get more compliments on my 1k uboat watch than on ANY of my other much more expensive watches... just how it goes.
what is this u-boat watch?

It all depends. There are alot of variables. If you are over 45 years old I would (will get when I am older) go with a Rolex. A Rolex on a younger arm screams I am a coke dealer or I bought this at a street corner for $50 and I am trying to pose as a coke dealer. I personally like my Tag for day to day. I think I will break down for the Rolex for a “special occasion watch” here pretty soon. Since my wife told me I was crazy if I get the Harry Winston Opus 5 http://www.opus5.ch/visuals.html# OH HOW I WANT IT though. I like Omegas until I put them on, the face is so big it looks something like Flava Fla would wear.

your nuts............rolex is flawless on anyone, tags are shit.

rolex is kinda old money looking and if you are wearing one under 30... good chance it's fake, and even if it's not, everyone will think it is... to top that, most all of their lower models are ugly. The movement is important, but not important enough to have an ugly watch!

I’m old fashioned.

Rolex
Cartier Tank
Patek Philippe Calatrava

So far only have the Rolex and Cartier, also collect pens as in Fountain Pens.

I bought a Lotus in Europe. I never cared for watches and only used my cellphone to tell time. The chronograph Lotus model I have is very high quality. I wear it 24/7 and have bumped the crystal on stone, metal (by accident of course) and there is not one scratch on the crystal. It is amazing. And people stare at it all the time and compliment me on it. It's stainless steel and looks sporty yet sophisticated.
They don't seem to be very big in the US but they are in Spain (and in western Europe I assume).

I own a 50th anniversary Rolex Submariner, and a Tissot PRS, but the watch that I own that gets the most compliments is my new Toy Watch. Go figure.

There used to be a couple of web based high end watch vendors that a friend told me were reputable. Does anyone have any information on legit internet watch vendors of high end watches?

I am currently looking at a Hamilton Regatta, we are buying a house in the very near future and the wife is keeping the budget under $750. Any feedback on the brand?

Agreed. I have to agree with Chris Rock, who called Tag the "young guys Rolex" ...I have a Tag and an Accutron (which is the highest end of the Bulova line), and would rather wear either of those than a Rolex.

I really can't get down with that statement. You are saying that the whole reason you wouldn't wear a Rolex is because you would be thinking that everyone would be saying it's fake? As long as it's real, and you know it's real, who cares. That's why I have a 50th Anniversary Sub. Everyone has seen fake Presidents and the like, so no one really doubts the authenticity of mine. Oh yeah, I'm also an old man, so that helps. I'm 38, and most people guess me for 27. My friends know what I do for a living, so no one questions my ability to afford a Rolex.

I wasn't the guy who said that people would think that it was fake. I do think that Rolex is kind of old school...some things are old school and cool (Social Distortion, Jack Daniels, etc....)...Rolex just isn't one of those things that I think I can pull off.

I'm 29, tattoo'd heavily, pierced up, shaved head, timberlands, etc....I just can't rock a Rolex...

Maybe when I'm 38!

LOL! Cheers. You do have a couple of good points there.

I have a gold and stainless Rolex and I love it.. Great watch.. good luck

same here, daytona 18k n stainless. I almost never wear it watches bother my wrist. gorgeous watch tho

Tag and Oakley are not in the same class...

Find me a $5k Oakley, then we can talk about it being in the same class as a Tag. C'mon now...

I wear my Tag more than any other watch I own...but..

My new Accutron (Bulova) is nice too, actually...

Come to think of it, all (3) of my watches were gifts, so I'm very attached to them. I even have an old Orvis (leather band) that my mom gave me, and it's not a real kick-ass high end watch, but it gets regular rotation on my wrist.

The only thing I wouldn't wear is a digital...unless it had a really cool calculator on it...

I have a Breitling SuperOcean Chonograph. It came w/ a steel bracelet, but I picked up a crocodile strap w/ deployment clasp for dressin up.

Lookin to pick up a Rolex SubMariner as well.

i wear a traser h3 to work, a tag formula 1 to the gym, a omega seamaster ru ning errands, a rolex gmt on nights out, and a rolex day date to weddings and funerals

Rolex SubMariner with a black face looks good on ANYONE. Its just a clean ass watch.

My Tag (stainless) is actually 100% clean. No Numbers, no markings, no nothing, really. Just stainless and brushed steel...one face, no 3-faces on the one, etc...

sounds nice, go try the stainless sub on, you will fall in love.

Just picked up a Gevril Tribeca. It's like a Rolex Daytona, only the movement is way better quality, it's heavier, and it's thicker than the Rolex.

I love gevril... bang for buck maximus

oh and 2nd the breitling comment from above... only thing about breitling... they're HUGE AND FLASHY! so prepare for a mugging lol.

Calling your Heuer watch a "Tag" is like calling your Corvette a "GM".

SOLD:
Rolex Sub
Cartier Pasha
Movado (forgot the style, was a gift)

Currient:
Panerai-LOVE IT
Patek- till death, gift from father.

Love those Patek's!

My grandfather gave me one when I graduated college. The best part about them is they look like a normal $20 watch but the people who know, know....

I really think Bell & Ross is going to be the leader of "young watch" movement... no one else has such cool designs without sacrificing movement/tolerances.

I too really love the Bell & Ross style. I bought one as a replica am glad I did. It looks great but I realized it is too large to wear comforably. Currently my two favorites are an Invicta Sub, and RLT Aviator. RLT is a small britsh company using various swiss mechanical movements.

I have a watch fetish, like my wife does for shoes...my favorite is my Rolex Date-Just..Simple, elegant and pretty affordable. Only spent $3700.00
Rolex4jpg.jpg

I need a winder, even with only three Automatic watches it's a chore keeping them all going, or catching up if I let one die for a few days.

I got my winder (and my Panerai) from my Dad. I thought he was going to kill me when he saw it lying on the dresser unwound.

Watches are really a fashionable and useful accessories. I am always try to find out new watches. May be this forum prove helpful for me.

Rolex is the nice brand for watches .

Rolex is nothing more than the "Timex" of high end Swiss watches. I own 31 watches, 3 of which are Rolex (2 Submariner's, and a full size 18K Yachtmaster), and only own these as they were purchased at a government foreclosure auction on a local jewelry store. I wouldn't purchase another Rolex if someone GAVE me the money, and said to do just that with it. Even after being factory serviced, they are NEVER better than +/- 3 seconds a day to the atomic clock. They are absolute garbage in the high end watch market.

If you want to talk REAL watches, let's talk Audemars Piguet, Vacheron and Constantin, Ulysse Nardin, and Franck Muller. I own a watch from each and every one of those manufacturers, and EVERY SINGLE ONE makes each and every Rolex I have ever seen look like a piece of garbage side by side. I'm not talking about diamonds and "bling" either. I'm talking about classic lines, and quality craftsmanship.

Hell, I wear a Tag Heuer Formula One as my everyday bang around watch, and a 10K 1955 Hamilton Myron as my normal dress watch, and hold BOTH in higher regards than my Rolex's!
