Walking BB Lunges

ExtraMile

High End Bro
Platinum
Iv been doing walking db lunges for a while now and although I hate the exercise they really kill my wheels after heavy squats. I would like to switch to walking lunges with a barbell now though. But the only problem is how do you get the bar on and off your back? At the beginning I could pushpress it over my head until I get very strong on these but at the end what am I meant to do? How do others get around this?

do you just manage to press it back overhead again or do you just dump the bar? because I think after a while the gym manager would tell me off for dropping the bar...

NIce Sig bro! :)

At my gym we have a squat rack and you can change the racks to the outside, so when youre done you can just rack it like youre done with a squat

yeah.. the guys who do it at my gym treat it like a squat as far as racking and unracking it goes... unrack it like a squat, take a few steps back, lunge, and rack it

+1 for the split squats. Add these in, and keep doing DB Walking lunges.

DB walking lunge is one of my favorite exercises. Not only is it a close chain, unilateral exercise, it also is great work for the posture muscles. Your scap retractors should be held back and iso contracted. This is a very natural way to strengthen your upper back and will help to correct/prevent many shoulder/back problems, if performed correctly. Also, any exercise where the most dangerous aspect is dropping a DB on your toe, means it's pretty darn safe.

Why do you want to use a bar? To go heavier right? Probably feel like you want to shift the emphasis to more strength dominant, with lower reps? If so,

I would continue to do DB lunges, trying to get as heavy as possible for a moderate to high rep range(10-20). And incorporate barbell split squats as the heavier, moderate-low rep exercise (5-10), performed first.

It's pretty easy to get over confident and get stuck at the bottom of a split squat, so watch for this.

whew welcome to big boy training. Walking barbells are brutal.

I always used to just pushpress the bar overhead since the weight isn't going to be real heavy. You don't need much. You'll see. 80lbs will feel like 500lb pretty quick depending on how deep you stride.

I wanted to use a barbell because when holding db's for a long time my traps burn like hell and make me drop them. And also just because I did it with a barbell for a while before and prefered it...

Thing is where the squat rack is there is not enough space to do them and I cant move it to where there is space. I think Im just gonna have to pushpress it up...

Bulgarian split squats are pretty much what everyone and their grandmothers do at my gym

i love heavy barbell lunges...
just get in the rack, unrack, and put one leg back and do your lunges on one leg... re rack for a bit and do the other side... no need to walk with it... plus you get the safety that the rack provides... i like to go really heavy and have even done 1rm lunges...

if anyone reads my log they will know iv got a tweaked erector atm, so Ill have to see how leg day goes next monday. If its ok to squat and lunge I will video my BB lunges if the gym isnt too busy.

"You don't need much. You'll see. 80lbs will feel like 500lb" Im determined to do more than 80lb now.
