Vista explorer.exe spike

Everytime i play a game or something it runs smooth for about 10 secs then drops to about 3 fps, with task manager open i notice explorer.exe just consumes all my CPU until it his 100%. Anyone have any fixes to this or is it just that vista sucks that bad?

Do You have the SP1 installed? if not Install it.!
Other check if there is an update for Your game.!

Yeah i got Sp1 installed, and its no particular game. It does it with all games and even some movie files, my system is good too it shouldnt have problems. For some reason vista just killin me...

generally explorer.exe using 100% cpu means that a program (genreally other then explorer.exe) is not responding. You can use task manager to kill explorer.exe (and probably lose your desktop) and the kill may hang as well. Generally when I've had that issue run32dll.exe is trying to run a dll file as an executable and the dll file is what the problem is. The easiest thing to do would be look in task manager and see what all programs are running. Then use http://www.radarsync.com/ to check for available upgrades. Get the upgrades via google or whatever. Then uninstall anything that was in taskmanger that you can do without. Shit like yahoo toolbar , google toolbar, the weather channel desktop crap.
Also if that does not catch the problem, go to http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ and run a complete scan on your system

Thanks Gjohnson i'll def try those....i did end explorer.exe and it didnt help, so it does have to be some other trash consuming the cpu....

Yeah , those are hard to track down. But generally I would look into run32dll.exe and one of the dll / ocx files being run as an exe. Removing unwanted ie plugins and mozilla add-ons can help as well.

As far as system scan , I just signed up for ad-aware 2008 beta test and it does a good job or removing grayware / malware.

Also another good utility is ccleaner (the firce c is short for crap) and it will delete gigs of unwanted and temporary "crap" from you machine

Are you experiencing this issue while playong one particular game?

Are you running vista on hardware capable of supporting vista?

When these issues happen, go into computer management. In computer management you will find event logs, look at the logs for system and application.

You can look up the errors at "eventid.net" , very good site.

Now let me ask You, How many Video Memory do You have? because if You have less than 128, Vista will drain it fast just with wallpaper, icons, smoth fonts etc..!

I immediately think of thermal issues.

Since it runs smoothly for 10 s or so, then slows down, it could be the graphics card (or processor) overheating and reducing its speed to compensate.

Explorer.exe running at 100% could mean any number of things. Yes, Vista does suck this bad though.

Fist, what are the specs of your system?

What games are you playing?

It sounds like a driver issue with the video card since its only occurring during gaming
