I can't help thinking that if this and previous US adminstrations had been more environmentally conscious and pushed hard for alternative energy sources this mess wouldn't be so bad.

as for big oil. Did you ever hear bout the guy who created a car that could run on water? No, because he's dead. <my poor attempt at humor> But we are totally dependent on oil, with all our technology we have not invested nearly enough into alternative energy. In fact, it seems like fuel economy in SUV's has gone down. nice.

I have seen many calls for raising the standards of fuel consumption, but none from the Bush administration. WHY?

Definatly agree with that nature boy, england tried to control the world back when the united states was just beginng and we all see how well they did =p. Its to difficult to try and run another entire country while our leaders are still in this one. Well we could always just nuke them into oblivion and as we all know a empty country requires no leadership =).
