U.S. apparently getting other countries fatter

Americans are fat and getting fatter by the year. Recent data reported in medical journal Lancet showed that BMI (Body Mass Index), a recognized measurement of obesity, is higher on average in America than in any other nation.

The obesity problem, however, is international. The report in Lancet states that "In 2008, 9.8 percent of the world's male population were obese, as were 13.8 percent of women. In 1980, these rates were 4.8 percent and 7.9 percent." U.S. eating habits and diets have been exported, many experts say. Nations which before had relatively lean diets which were high in grains and fruits now consume many more soft drinks and hamburgers.

The journal Health Affairs reported last year that overall obesity-related health spending reached $147 billion in the U.S., about double what it was a decade earlier.

More here.

At least MI ain't on that list lol. Anyways whatever happened to a little something called willpower?

globalization of mcdonalds and other US based companies is a big part of it.

doesn't take a genius to figure that's been going out for quite a while, now it's finally starting to show tangible effects

meh...we get blamed for everything...we've become a bunch of pussies in the u.s...i say we blame the french for that..who's with me? :wavey:

<-------------- i like mcdonald's and wendy's and popeye's and taco bell and kfc and burger king and arby's and in-n-out, etc as much as the next guy...i just don't eat that shit very often because it's not fucking good for you...a 3 year old knows that...well...mine did anyway...because that's what we taught them...it's called "personal responsibility" and we're taught to take it in our house :whatever:

Yeah, fast food is awesome, but I eat it probably 1-2 times per month. I haven't had pizza in about 3-4 months. Shitty food isn't something I think about or crave.

1) more americans are sitting in boring office jobs & getting zero exercise. Eating lunch is thoroughly enjoyed
2) in the past, food eaten was what was in your house. Peopel didn't eat that much, cuz it would mean someone would have to go the market the next day. Now you can just order in whatever you want and eat like pigs.
3) Due to the agricultural revolution, food is now abundant and cheap. You can get it anywhere, at a low cost and have as many varities as possible. Food is the national pasttime now.
4) the diet & fast food industry work in tandem. One keeps you fat and the other sells you all kinds of machines, pills and expensive programs that never work. Skinny people are bad business.

oh boy...sometimes it is for me!!! but, i actually enjoy self-discipline...self-deprivation...just the whole act of saying "nope. not today."...it's really quite satisfying and liberating...i'm sure i'm a little fukkin' weird...but, i'm 46 years old and i sit at a desk all day and i have killer abs so, fuckkit! :)

I eat like a damn pig

but I also workout

kinda funny how that works :)

Oh yeah, and at 6'3 215, my BMI is 27, which makes me overweight. Yeah...... Huge fatass here.

BMI is pure a pure bullshit way to measure something like that.

Yep.

When the Mediterranean diet kicked off CBS News did a piece showing 80-90 y.o. men working in the field all day eating fish, whole wheat, olive oil, and red wine.

Then, they switched over to the chubster adolescents in the town feasting on daily Big Macs.

a lot of western cultures have low cancer rates because of their diet, americans need to realize what the fuck theyre eating. im 21 so i dont care right now but once i even see an ounce of fat im dieting and eating better. fuck lazy people, gotta love when they blame their thyroid

People lock-in their dietary lifestyles at your age and find it almost impossible to change later in life.

i'm 46 y/o, i'm 6'2" and 225 and i have a 34 inch waist...these attributes give me a bmi of 28.9 and put me at moderate risk of serious health problems :lmao:

can't say i didn't do the same as you when i was your age glad. cept knock up some slut. i used to have mad pulling out skillz.

Hit it hard during the week and you don't gotta worry about it :)

I'll weekend warrior the hell outta it. Pizza, shots, and beers, bring it :)

you people are talking as of the only metrics of physical health are lean body mass and body fat level.

...and....my bp is 115-120/70-80 and my hdl is 100 and my ldl is 50...other than my frigged up knees and a little muscle enzyme thing that my doc and i are trying to track down, i'd say my overall health is pretty friggin' good...my lean body mass is just a visible symptom of my condition :)

You probably have slightly elevated liver enzymes (ATL and ATC maybe? I forget the acronyms). That's common in us old farts who still work out a lot.

no...actually it's a muscle enzyme thing (he used the words potential myopathy), which is kind of unusual considering my overall health, etc...it could be a symptom of overtraining (doubtful...while i exercise regularly and vigorously, i'm hardly killing myself) but, my doc doesn't want to rule anything out, so we're looking into it...i got a feeling it might be the old fart thing :(

Did he check a myglobin too?

dunno...he sent me to an endo because my free-test level is still kind of low, even though i'm currently getting 250mg of test cyp every 7 days, so the endo is trying to figure that out and, in the mean time, he's referring me to neuro for the enzyme issue.

i hope i'm not dying, because i feel pretty dang good right now!

I'm sure you're in good hands.

am i? shit, i don't know. my gen'l prac is one of my clients...dude is amazing...reads something one time, remembers it forever...excellent diagnostician (is that even a word??)...plus, he's kind of a ernest hemingway sort of a guy, kinda larger than life...played football and wrestled while in college while doing pre-med, did a tour in the navy, lived in brazil with the gracie's for a year and immersed himself in jiu jitsu...he's getting a little older now but he's still very active and understands my need to be active.

Wait a second!

You're on 250mg of cyp year-round?

Wait a second!

You're on 250mg of cyp year-round?

yes...for over two years now.

it was pretty low for a number of years but, it didn't really manifest itself in a negative way until a couple/few years ago...i found myself in the midst of this extended period of "blah"...i was tired (friggin' exhausted actually) and a little grumpy and my joints were all achey and i just didn't have any enthusiasm plus, i had started to get a little chunky (for me anyway)...so, my doc ran all the usual tests and i specifically asked for him to check my testosterone (because it had tested low in the past) and, it was quite low...so, after some additional tests and a review of my records from my prior doc in pittsburgh, he started me on test cyp at 200mg every 14 days...then, after a while we moved it to every 10 days...then, we moved it to 250mg...now, it's at 250mg ew.
