Training at the GYM (YMCA)

variation

New member
ok, well normally I train at home, so I just use my own stuff..

but tonight I went to the gym... and I don't see anyone doing like deadlifts.. weird... I'm going again wednesday and I do deadlifts on wednesday, so I'm wondering what I should do, should I just grab one of the bars off one of the bench press stations and use it for deadlifts?

what do you guys do at your gyms?

I guess I'm lucky. We have a platform for squats and deads. Occasionally, it will be occupied by someone who won't share. Then, I just set up my bar on the regular floor. No one minds, and everything is good to go.

I train at home as well. But if I am on a trip and need to visit a gym, I just grab a bar, and place it on the floor. Most gym's won't mind as long as you don't abuse their equipment.

I do ask, however, if the gym has any rules against chalk or deadlifting. (Yes, I have heard of gyms that don't allow deadlifting.)

ah, thanks for the replies, I don't want to ask them, so hell, I'll just grab a bar and start deadlifting, if someone comes over and asks me to stop.. well, I guess I will otherwise I'll get my dead lifts in :)

thanks again.

If you do find one that asks you to stop, be sure and let the rest of know which one it is. So we make sure we never go there....:D

i go to a Y as well (which sucks) and whenever i do deads i just take any available bar and plop it on the floor.
no one has said asnything to me but i do get weird looks from the teen 'flat bench and 1/2 preacher curl' crowd

I love it when u do deadlifts and then someone comes up to you and says, doesnt that hurt your back?

And i get to say, "only if i dont get it up."

Yeah man , no one does deadlifts at my gym. The like to do those dumbell side raises and dumbel flyes. And when I do the deadlifts those ppl look like morons as if I committed a sin or something. Once, a guy told me that exercise is bad for the back, but I said "hehe not if you do it like this" and proceeded doing it. He looked at me as if thinking "what a stubborn asshole". And I was thinking my back>>> yours.

i lifted at a gym once where there was a bingo hall next door with paper thin walls. we were deadlifting and the fucking bingo jackass sent the cops over to make us stop. as soon as he left we resumed deadlifting, and made it a point to drop the bar:lmao: bingo people piss me off.

just find a vacant bar.......... there are plenty.

I enjoy the stares I get while deadlifting at my gym. I also liked the 3 teenagers laughing at me doing bent over rows. They must have thought it looked funny from the pec deck.

I just grab any old bar myself. Usually from the 1 and only squat rack in my gym since nobody uses it.

i think you mean 1/2 bench and preacher curl crowd :D

years ago rightr after my last powerlifting comp, i joined New york sports club.

i was squating and during one of my working sets i grunted really loud.

This hot chick(employee). You know the aerobics chick. Came over and said "We do not lift like that here" I replied "What are you talking about?" She said "The yelling" I went to the manager and got a refund. He wanted to up my membership. i laughed at him as i was walking out.

I had 450 on the bar for reps. I think it scared the people around me. and her.

Hilarious story bds. I love it.

I just grab a bar off of one of the empty benches. At my gym the area with all of the free weights (the only area that I use) has rubberized mats on the floor. The rest of the gym is carpeted. The owner of the gym doesn't really want us to do anything with free weights on the carpet. He claims that it will mess it up.

He also jokes around with me about dropping the bar after doing deadlifts. I'm 6'5", so it is a pretty long way for the bar to drop. :)
