Tradmill or road

Is running the treadmill just as beneficial as running on the road or a track. My boxing coach says the treadmill is nowhere near as good.

What about in the cold weather and in the wind and rain, would running the treadmill be better than running in those condition?

I like a dirt or rubber track, as it is easier on my shins and knees

I agree, but road work is very valuable due to it's varying inclines and declines which add and decrease intensity which supposedly speeds up metabolism. Like 2Thick said, swimming is ideal.

Cheers

id go with the road/track or even bike b/c you have to think about the moter on the treadmill. ive had to many trainers tell me about this.. if you are on a treadmill you have the moter helping pulling you along

Go run on a trail with deer and shit early in the morning. Fresh air, trees, different scenery, switchbacks, and sunshine is far better than being stuck under false lighting running in place with a bunch of stupid people around you while listening to some crappy gym music. The exception being the occasional blonde on the treadmill in front of you of course:)

In the spring, summer and fall, I like to get in the occasional morning jog outside, but right now it's hanging around the low 40's and high 30's and it just doesn't seem healthy running in that. It feels like the wind gets sucked out o you and you have to bundle up to keep your knees from knocking while you run. Right now I'm using a Nordic Track Butt and Thigh shaper (laugh if you want, but my ass is getting prety tight). I can't wait for the sun to be out and in effect again though, I really enjoy the outdoor scenery and I feel like the heat helps keep my joints lubricated so when I hit the gym later on my training goes a lot smoother.

As far as Cardio is concerned, I think Variety and Intensity are key.

You can run, use the treadmill, swim, row etc.... However, keep each of the activites very intense and rotate the activity and you should have great results.
