Traditionally, who pays for weddings, bride or groom?

tradition is.the FATHER of the bride is saposed to pay.but most of the time fathers are never around anny more so that went out the windo.

it was supposed to be the brides family that paid for it, but these days, the bride makes the wedding that damn expensive that it ends up being paid by everybody
my sister had 900 guests on the guestlist for a fully catered wedding. 900!!!.

In Venezuela, being a very conservative country (not 
btw) it's almost MANDATORY that the bride's family pays for everything. Nowadays, as in other countries as well, the family with the most money pays most of the bill (no point in sending the bride family into bankcrupty for the sake of the party).
In our case it was a combination, I think that is the way it works now: I personally payed for some things, my wife payed for others, my father in law did others, and my mother other things.
Some may decide to contribute with work (for example, the flower thingies) instead of money.
In Germany, where they barely marry each other, and when they do, they have lived together for ages, weddings are usually not too big a deal, and the couple pays for it, not the family. (in my short experience with weddings here).
