torn pec question

my training partner (early to mid 50's max bench 350#) several months ago partially tore his pec near the shoulder (according to urgent care doctor). the whole damn thing was black and blue (i mean seriously black and blue) from shoulder to wrist. anyway, my question, to anyone who has had, or has knowledge of this type of injury, what are the normal recovery timeframes? 50%, 75%, 100%? waiting on him to heal is really throwing off my routine, and i think for him it's more mental at this point than physical. thanks for any info guys!

If you do a search on some of my threads you will find I had the same injury mid summer and I have 100%+ back. The tear I had was of the pec major and the bruising is because of the tear and having it go from shoulder to wrist like I did is that the muscle connects in each point, shoulder, elbow and wrist and the tear caused a strain of the tendon.
My recovery was around 6wks. To get back up to the same weight + a little, but it’s because I decided to listen to my doc since he’s cool with testing me anytime.
The first 2wks I didn’t touch my chest besides stretching and wk3-4 just used the bar for bench to get the full range back as I found it became very tight and I had to spend a lot of time massaging the torn area.
After wk4 I started to add half the weight and start the usual exercises.
Also massage therapy is great and ultrasonic therapy if you can get it in your city from a physiotherapist.

Hope this can help,

P.S. The body is symmetrical by design, so they say that if one side is injured then by working the opposite side the body will adjust.

Yep, I ripped my left pec tendon clean off the bone and needed surgery to fix it.

First thing your buddy needs to do is get an MRI. Then they will know if its a muscle tear, tendon tear or possibly both. If they just looked at it in the emergency room, there's no way for sure to tell how much damage was done internally.

Going through physical therapy was pure hell. This happened around 2 years ago and even to this day its only about 85% at best.
