believing this = getting duped. I don't understand why you are being so stubborn about this. Plus she probably had to read through a lot of nonsense, and definitely got excited at the prospect of finding a scholar in her field of study who was willing to interact with her. And it's likely that she had at least some faint hope that she was planting seeds for professional advancement as well..
