The original G'nR were the epitomy of rock

If you met me, you wouldn't begin to describe me as redneck, at all.

While I am a fan of G'nR, your thesis is screwed:). Zeppelin is not only the prototype, BUT the epitome of Rock and, IMO, has absolutely no correlation to psychedlic bands such as The Grateful Dead.

John Bonham died injesting his own vomit to prove it to you. :artist:

A lot of Zeppelin's songs were heavily drug influenced. The good thing about G'nR was you didn't have to be under the influence to fully appreciate them. They sounded their best when listening dead sober. Their music also had more energy than pretty much any other band (besides perhaps Metallica) mentioned in this thread. Although they ultimately surpassed even Metallica with their ability to successfully branch out in style. To date there hasn't really been a band able to write a decent ballad since G'nR, for example. Sure, they may not have been the most technically proficient group, but they made up for it with a variety of songs that were consistently interesting to listen to, both lyrically and musically. Few bands have managed to hold my attention and interest through an entire album, let alone each album they've done. G'nR will never get old to me.

Uh, that's quite a subjective observation. First time I've ever heard anyone say that. I personally don't have to be under the influence of anything to enjoy Stairway, Black Dog, All of my Love, or any of their songs. But to each his own.

And when you say "their music had more energy than any other band"...that's also verrrrrrrry subjective. and what do you mean by energy?

Clapton, Billy Joel, Elton John, Eagles, Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, U2, and Greenday are the bands off the top of my head that I can think of who've written good ballads since then

Epitome/prototype=drugs, sex, rock and roll. And Zeppelin was heavily influenced by the Blues. I'm beginning to think you've never heard the Zeppelin catalog.

I've listened to a dozen or so songs of what is widely considered their best (besides Stairway). It was ok but never jumped out at me as being great rock n roll like many seem to think. I never was like "Damn this is good"

What the hell, list some of what you consider their best and I'll listen more seriously and see if I can relate.

I suppose it's all a matter of personal taste (subjective like you said) as well as musical style, but I can honestly say I haven't heard something as epic-sounding as say, Estranged, November Rain, Civil War, etc. in the last decade or more.
If you could point a recent example out to me I'd give my 2 cents or if I haven't yet heard it, give it an honest listen.

Well music is completely dependent on taste. Which is why some people unexplicably like Yanni and Kenny G :). So what I consider good music you'll prolly consider shit and vice versa. Add in the obvious bias and theres no point to that...

and if you can't see why groups such as the Stones, Beatles, Queen, Hendrix, etc. are great rock n roll, well theres nothing I can say really
