sucked, totally unbelievable...was it supposed to be based on whitey bulger?
should have followed whitey's real life career as opposed to some bullshit fictious storyline that was completely unrealistic
come one, what type of cagey gangster is gonna allow a stranger (leo) to walk right into his inner circle?
how would matt damon get away with such an extravagant life on a cops salary?
this movie sucked, though had mad potential

Re: The Departed: Reviewh

I saw it and didn't enjoy it either...

lots of good name actors... lots of fanfare, but it ultimatley let me down.

just too unrealistic
realism is important for the orgainized crime movie genre

Based on an Asian movie called Infernal Affairs and adapted to be much like Whitey Bulger.

I see where your coming from but I was luckily able to look past those issues so I enjoyed it very much. Watch it again and listen to the small talk -- it's important and contains valuable info. Little filler because it was so long as is. Costigan was undercover for over a year I think or about that. Sullivan was with Nicholson since he was young.

i thought it was o.k.

the movie was good IMO.

name me one such gangster movie that doesn't have unrealistic shit.

BASED on books, which were BASED on true accounts. Sure, no embellishment there. (right)

You are self pwning due to your naiveness.

i agree with bino

i expect things to be realistic, especially with such a powerful cast and storyline

godfather was realistic for it's time

how the hell do you get away with texting someone like matt damon was

get the fuck outta here

when i hear critics claiming a movie is the best of it's genre since blah blah, i immediatley know it's not.

scarface was supposed to be a flop

what did you think was unrealistic about either of these movies (casino/wiseguy)

It's pretty shallow but is fun to watch -- nothing more IMO. Largely popular due to hip-hop and rap.

as swole mentioned...
the texting and phone shit did get ridiculous in departed.
too much trying to make it suspenseful. I agree with this.

I do agree that casino and goodfellas tried more to present the story as a chronicle of what happened.. And they less tried to use artificial movie shit (like the phone crap etc) to make it more suspenseful (in fact neither was really suspenseful at all, rather they were like watching a story someone told on film)...

I think we are more disagreeing on the way they tried to build suspense etc rather than the realisticness (I think departed (except for a few things like th phones) wasn't that unrealistic)

and since I wasn't there I can't tell you how things in casino and goodfellas are embellished... but like any story you know some things are.

I was pretty disappointed with it as well. It could barely hold my attention which is pretty pathetic for an action movie

I liked it. but then again im not one to sit there and break down every part and see if its believable. i take it for what it is, a "movie" and I try to get my 20 bucks worth.

and that should be the point.

too many people take movie to be reality, unfortunately. So we end up with directors like Oliver Stone somehow rewriting history with garbage films, and it becomes widely accepted as fact...

I saw it last night. Better than the movies I've been seeing lately. So it's good.

certain movies are gonna get more scrutiny for their "realisticness"
obiviously movies like star wars or the ring get a pass...but movies that deal with real life events (vietnam, crime, etc) need to be realistic in order to succed as a good movie.
the fact that leo was able to gain immediate access to costello's inner circle just strikes me as rediculous...do you think if you approached john gotti he would just let you waltz into his circle and possibly turn witness against him?
hell no
and that to me nullified any good aspects of this movie

of course if not for that fact, there would be no movie.

of course watching hours of him do meaningless tasks would be totally entertaining and inspire the public to see the sequel, where he finally gets into the group and the real story gets underway...

lol, a 3 hour first movie where leo does bitch work
i see your point, and i understand movies gotta rush certain things for the sake of a timeline
i just thought they could have done a better job explaining how a unknown was able to penetrate the depths of a major OC circle.
Call me gaye, but Leo, Marky Mark, and Matt Damon are all top notch actors.
never seen a bad movie with them in it

most of the times a dude goes to the movies he's brings a chick right? 10 bucks a pop = 20.
do you pay for dudes that go with you?
didn't you make a thread about this?

what did you think of Donny Brasco?

I totally agree they could have used less artificial means of hyping up the story. Taking out some of the elements (like the cell phones) and worrying less about maintaining excitement (making his ins take more time - and leaving some of that out obviously) would have made for a movie that would stand the test of time better (like goodfellas, etc)

Stylistically, the others are far superior movies.

decent movie, though i'm kinda sour on it cause i read the book first
good read btw.
better portrayl overall, they didn't skim on how donnie was able to befriend the wiseguys

I throw pennies away. Can you top that?

lol @ not liking a fiction movie because it was unbelieveable.. you prob. didn't like matrix either.... or gladiator..

...There's always that guy on the team too... he was a last minute replacement. he's not part of the original gang, but one of the other guys vouches for him. "No no dude trust me, this guy is cool. He's solid and he's cool." ... But he's not cool, is he? He doesn't really say anything ever, right? He just stands there and looks cool and then at one point he might be like "Let's kill these bitches."

i really liked it. but i guess i'm not an organized crime historian so nothing really jumped out at me as being too unrealistic

quite a bit different bro
this was supposed to be based on a true story

obviously that guy was a moron if he already had another cop in his outfit.. and he had someone inside telling what not to do and what to do and he still didn't listen.. makes sense.. ya someone like him would let a guy like that in his outfit..

Agreed, however it's urban legend that this was suppose to be about Whitey...

i watched it friday...it was alright....dialogue was a little contrived at times.

not scorcese's best work

As mentioned I watched it awhile back while on the road...

I rented it again to get a copy....

it's BETTER than 90% of the moveis I rent... but I still don't think it is a GREAT movie..

Def worth watching...

Characters based on Bulger have appeared on Law and Order and a number of other television programs. He is also the inspiration for the ruthless mob boss Frank Costello, who is played by Jack Nicholson in Martin Scorsese's 2006 film The Departed. In late 2006, Bulger was reportedly spotted in a San Diego movie theater leaving a showing of the movie. However, investigators have not confirmed this sighting as an official spotting of Bulger.

Thread coming up...

But my chest is flat... worst body part... & 30... my lower abs won't split up... there is no fat there at all, but the skin isn't tight enough to show the split... I have an uber deep belly button...

I'll give it 6 months.. .if bulking doesn't fill it up, or it doesn't tighten up - I am gonna get it nip'd and tucked..

awesome, you grew up in the middle of it all
regardless, that does not take away the fact that martin "loosely" based the departed on whitey bulger's life.
common knowledge bro
what make believe knowledge am i throwing at you?

he wasn't some unknown; frank costello knew billy costigan's dad.

the only part that is close, is the opening scene shooting the chicks in the head...thats it bro...

what about costello having fbi contacts?
doesn't that seem quite similiar to bulger having connely as his contact?

I've got to agree w/ you bino. I watched it last night and thought it was shit. I can't believe Martin S. got and award for that and not any of the Godfathers, WTF? I give it a D+ comparing it to his other films.

i don't know about a D grade
personally i'm thinking more of a strong C
the cast was all-star, and the plot did have it's moments.
but, as often happens, he (martin) relied to heavily on a all-star cast to carry the movie

I was thinking B-, and when we left the theater (we saw it when it came out), we all guessed it would win just because the competition really sucks in this day and age.

The competition back in the Raging Bull era was brutal.

Watched the movie tonite and thought it was a good plot & interesting....had more twists & turns......
