The Comeback Tour II - KB's new journal

Update:

Had the injection today, everything went fine. It feels really awesome to have 3 needles jammed into your back.

So here is the plan - hit it even harder for the next 3 months (I figure that is how long I have til this injection "wears off". Everything else takes second notice in my life. No more fucking around (not that I was before, but it's go time now). Will do some light exercise the next 4 days and start my 3-day split again on Monday. Will continue the stretching, core work and biking. Will also add in plyometrics and concentrate a little more on the weight training.

Word is Motherfucking BOND

What's your weight training going to look like?
Pretty much what it has been for the last few months - 2 body parts per day, lots of light compound movements jsut aimed at getting my back into the swing of things. Slow but gradual weight increase. Lots of body weight core work and stretching.

Update - Sat, Apr 15

Feeling alright post-injection. From my experiences, I know it takes a few days for some lingering side effects to die down. Did a few miles on the bike yesterday and felt pretty good, although that whole left side of my lower body was very sore and fatigued. Did about 8 miles or so today and felt fine doing it, just very fatigued.

Tues, Apr 18:

Was supposed to do legs yesterday but decided to wait another week til I feel 100% post-injection. Did about 8-10 miles this morning on the bike, felt a bit tight towards the end. Saw the doc today for a follow-up and we're both looking for much improvement in the enxt 2-3months.

So the name of the game is consistent rehab/strengthening for the summer.

You do the upright or reclining bike?

Best of wishes in your continued recovery, hope the injection helps out.

Oh and by the way you only have 8months left before Scotland vs Italy!

Thanks Scots. appreciate the support. and fuck, time flies by!

Thu, Apr 20:

Played tennis for an hour this morning. this was big for me - first time I have had an extended amount of high impact movement in a year. went alright. very sore already, felt it immediately in my left glute. was very fatigued early on.

my advice for what it's worth, forget everything that causes impact at this stage.. my life revolves around keeping my back from getting stressed outside the gym. It's gotta last a lifetime and anything that doesn't make it stronger or delays healing from workouts is a negative. Impact workouts, plyometrics - none of this is doing to 'heal' your back, a damaged disc doesn't react to high force stimulus the way muscles or ligaments do, it doesnt regenerate and get stronger. It just pops, eventually.

It sucks, but this takes years to get over... nearly 10 years after blowing out my L5 I still have down periods, months where things aren't quite right feeling, but its nothing like it was for the first 5 years. And fuck surgery, their definition of 'fixed' and ours are completely different. Good luck, I had a LOT of false starts on the road to recovery, but I pulled 705 last summer on a back that I was told by multiple docs would require surgery if I were to ever walk without pain.

I'm always up for hearing intelligent thoughts/opinions. The thought behind integrating plyometrics and impact movements back into my training is that I was doing so well with my rehab/strengthening, that the timing seemed right. There has to be a point where these things gtet brought back in, not to strengthen but to reintroduce them since they are a part of daily life.

I'm guessing you must be one lean ass MF right now.

Was getting there, but put on some fatty fatness when I was out of the gym and basically immobile the last 2 months or so.

but with the limited work I can do, leanness is the name of the game for the enxt few months. which is fine for a bit - the girls like abs I'm told.

What are your stats at present?

I have no friggin clue. Somewhere around:

5'11" / 6' (haven't checked my height in years and years)
175-180
BF = 13%

I have no clue on the BF to be honest.

Ok i'm thinking, just slightly above average build, tad bit of fatty fatness on the ass and belly region, maybe holding a shit load of water. Can only go by what you've told me, but dude, thats not bad considering. Nothing adding in a tidy diet won't take care of.

Pretty much sums it up. Haven't been training that long (relatively speaking) and in that short time have torn my RC (out of the gym of about 10 months on that one) and have an extruding disc (just getting back to the gym now after about a year off). But it'll all come around with some hard work and persistence.

Remember light with the weights!!!!!!

Miss24k - you coming over here with a whip is only going to inspire me to NOT work out ever! tee hee ;)

Scots - where the hell do you get off hitting on young ladies in MY journal?!!!

Update:
Been in a rut for a few weeks. Just lost all motivation, depressed with the thought of a long road back to recovery and perhaps not making any progress over the enxt few months. sat back and cried about it. but now it's time to do something about it. all I can do is work at it and hope for the best.

Rode about 5 miles today. Gym tomorrow morning. gonna try some very light weights

I'll hit on young ladies where and when I want and there is nothing you can do about it now or ever.

Don't let the depression get you down man, it's an easy cycle to get into and a hard one to break. So for your own good I must say: Get off your fucking whiny guinea ass and get back to work.

Best of wishes bro.

So what are you telling me, that you'll be inspired to train more if I stopped checking on you! lol ;)

Come on Killah, Believe me I know how it feels to receive what feels like another blow, and at some point you question yourself and say what the hell am I doing this for, but your better than that, and stronger than that, and I expect nothing more from you than to pick yourself back up and get your ass back to the gym.

I recall someone telling me recently nothing worth having, ever comes easily!

Keep at it brotha. coming back from an injury has its ups and downs. riding out the downs is the hard part. i hope that things start to turn around for you.

At least you are being smart about getting back into it. Most people would try and push themself through it, and end up becoming worse off. keep training smart, and your time will come.

Thanks Scots, Illum and 24k. your words help tremendously, believe me.

Update:

Went to the gym nice and early this morning (they just opened the doors, first one to walk in, whole place was dark, no music - full of possibilities). I'm trying to get back to my M/W/F training sched, so I sort of hit everything a little today. Just wanted to test the waters and also figure out what numbers I should start with next week. Felt fucking AWESOME! Haven't had that endorphine rush in quite a while. Gonna organize my training schedule today for next week. let's fucking go!!!!

i've never been injured, but i've had layoffs. the first time i hit the gym after a layoff, the only thing going through my mind is "damn it, i should be lifting much more". but i'm glad to be there nonetheless.
good to see your so positive KB (and sensible)

Mon, 5/29 update:

Had an awesome bout of a TERRIBLE sinus infection all last week and had to travel for work as well. tough week, no gym. but ate pretty well.

Today:

Legs and shoulders. Won't bother putting numbers up this week, since I'm using this week to figure out where my numbers should be at. Felt good overall though.

Nice job Killah, glad to see you're back to your schedule :)

I was in Miami for 10 days, and yup I think I have everything all together, I think that vacation was just what I needed some fun in the sun.

I'm going to be back in the gym on Monday, I need to remember to take it easy for a week or 2 at first and not go jump right back into it though, I'm sure that's going to be very hard to do, knowing myself lol.

Don't let your back go too long without doing something. I just "strained" mine last year, and I still have days where it hurts like hell. Mostly on, or after back days, which today is, so I'll be popping something to help me sleep tonight. :(

I don't know your exact situation but I would've gotten it done a while ago cause I can't live without the gym.

Unfortunately, it's never that simple. An extruding disc is a tough injury that can literally take years to get over (without surgery). I had no choice but to give everything out there a shot, short of surgery. I DO NOT want to be having back surgery at 26yo.

Didn't know it was that serious. 'Extruding' just sounds bad.

was tired and uninspired today. been working my ass off (possibly the worst month of the year for me I think), have to travel fri-mon to cali, then head straight to charlotte mon-thurs. then move apartments saturday. :)
EDIT: this doesn't give me an excuse to not train , tho....

Ok I won't bring my :velvett: out on your ass this week, since you have a very busy week, and it would be understandable if you missed a day or 2, I know how travelling messes up your back.

Ran 1.5 miles

I' mactually getting into this running thing....gonna try to make an appt soon with the back surgery specialist soon in the city

Tues, 7/4 Update:

been moving apartments since Friday. haven't had Inet access either.

moving took a major toll on me and the back, but getting over it now. ran a mile yesterday and a mile and a half today.

Hey Boo! :rose:

lol, I haven't been slacking (too much), just haven't been updating the log. I moved and haven't had Inet access for a couple weeks.

Been running often (I have no idea why!). 1.5 miles yesterday and 2 today.

Anyway, had an appt with the back specialist for Mon but had to move it to the next Mon (17th) cause I have a big client meeting this Mon. my doc told me that he thinks I should see the specialist but still is not sure surgery is the way to go. he explained that these injuries can take like 3 years to fully heal. UNREAL

Oh ok I was wondering what was going on with you, but you have a good explanation ;)

Wow 3 years that's crazy, well you do what is best for you hun, what do you think about the surgery?

I've been running a lot the last week or so. Going to the doc tomorrow - a back surgery specialist. We'll see what he says. I need to know the details before I make any decision. But man, this shit has to end.

I just started running again this week.

Good Luck tomorrow KB

Sun, 8/20 UPDATE:

Went for a 2nd opinion and the results were the same, as expected. I really liked this last surgeon though and I have decided to do the surgery with him. I am getting another MRI on Tues morning so the doc can create a gameplan for the surgery. Hoepfully I will meet with him later this week and get this damn surgery on the schedule.

Overall I am happy and excited at the possibility at getting my life back. It will no doubt be a long road back and I will probably be starting at square one again with my training (and no squats!!!), but there is nothing but possibility and opportunity ahead.

I'll start a new journal to track my progress from surgery to health

Th, 8/24 UPDATE:

Had an MRI this morning and am scheduled for an EMG in about 2 hours, per the surgeon's request. Surgery is offically scheduled for 9.22

Miss24k said:
How did everything go Killah?
:wavey:

actually, pretty damn well. easiest MRI I have ever had. the EMG was just interesting. for those that don't know, the purpose of the EMG is to first and foremost determine if there is any nerve damage caused by the herniated disc. the doc sends electric pumps through your leg, which measures the responsiveness of the nerve. good news is I don't have any nerve damage. he also checked my left leg muscles, which was really cool cause he sticks needles in the muscles and you actually listen to the muscles on laptop speakers.
