Tell me about your digital camera....

I'm in the market to replace my 3.1MP Kodak. I've been looking at either a Canon Powershot or Nikon Coolpix. My price range is around $500, give or take a little.

I'd like to know what you have, if you like it, and why you chose that one over other models.

I have a old kodak 2.0, I only use it at parties so I couldn't care about quality. you probally are looking for something above 3 mp so this post isn't really gonna help you ....

Those retail for like $1900 dollars. Way outta my price range. I have camera envy now, though. LOL.

the eye can't distinguish anything over 4MP, the only reason you'd need anything higher than that is if you're looking to make 10' by 10' prints @ high quality, or you do a lot of proffessional photowork, photoshop stuff :)

Or if you are lusting after the newest technology... which I am. I am torn between a 5MP that is a coupla hundred bucks or the newer 8MP that is way more pricey... but it's EIGHT MP.

What about optical zoom? Is more better or is that a wash after a certain amount, also?
 
go for as high of OPTICAL zoom as you can. I know some come with around 10X and up Optical zoom which is AWESOME!!!

digital zoom just uses pixels to fill in and its bad :(

OH, try to find a camera that has aftermarket lenses available, for farther away shots, and super up close shots :)

.. i understand the lust for new technology.. but i bet if you wait 2-3 months those 8mp will come down in price by a significant amount... of course theyll probably have 12mp out and then you'll be torn once again. lol
 
I just bought a Sony Cybershot 7.2 megapixels.

I love it so far. Pictures are awesome compared to other cameras I tried. :Perk:

You're probably thinking of the new E-1. The E-10 came out in 2000. They can be found on ebay in good shape for $300-400. They are a nice camera but a little behind the times if you're just getting in the market. Also more of a professional camera.

It's an SLR (single lens reflex) camera so it's kind of big and heavy. There is also a bit of a learning curve. If you don't want to take the time to learn what f-stops, ISO, shutter speeds, and depth of field it would be sort of a waste, and you should stick to a more "point-&-shoot" style digicam.

The kind of camera you want really depends on what kind of shooting would you be doing. I'm a fan of Canon products and use both their consumer and professional level cameras and lens. They have all shapes and sizes for almost any style photographer.

If you're just taking pictures of vacation, friends & family and want easy portability and durability something in the Canon powershot line would be nice. With your price range you could get a higher end model like the PowerShot S2 IS Excellent optics, little shutter lag, very good low-light performance, built-in IS (Image Stabilization), and even some video features.

yeah.. Canon Powershot series are really nice :D and they're really ergonomic, plus they're much more affordable, and high quality :D *waits for Canon endorsement check* :)

The S2 IS is another one I'm looking at right now. I've gotten a lot of endorsements from Canon and Nikon users. LOL.
 
mines a piece of shit 3.2MP that i bought a year or 2 ago.. works so i keep it
 
I have 2 very simple rules for selecting a camera:

1. whatever you do, STICK to camera manufacturerd (canon, olympus, nikon, etc...) and ditch electronics-equipment-turned-camera-makers (sony, casio, etc).

2. ALWAYS pick full glass lenses

Having said that, there is a couple nice NIkons Coolpix with a 8X Optical zoom in your price range
 
I bought the Canon Powershot A95 in January. Takes awesome pics, ridiculous amount of features, and a swivel-mounted viewscreen. Great camera

Me Too, same model, its fuckin great. The image quality is excellent.
 
I have a cannon powershot. I have no idea how to use it for the most part. I can take and upload pictures but I can't find the big book of instructions so I'm lost when it comes to having it do anything else.

When it gets screwed up or I get confused I usually throw it on the floor. I don't know if that helps things but it makes me feel better.

I tried an Olympus and my pictures were crap becauuse the shutter speed was always weird and difficult. I tried a Fuji and almost threw the thing in the ocean.

I wanted a camera to take a lot pictures of marine mammals (who don't sit still and can be in the water/or out and you have to be fast) For a beginner, the SONY 7.2 rocks. It's easy and fast. The beach settings take amazing outdoor water pictures. :Perk:
 
Can I get a good quality digi camera for arounf $250??
I have a gift certificate from Best Buy and I have been pondering using it to buy a camera.

I went last night to Best Buy and bought the Olympus Stylus 500. They didn't have the Kodak I was looking for but I really like this one so far. Alot of cool features. 5mp with a 3x zoom and 2.5" Hyper Crystal LCD screen. Pretty simple to use. I can also do streaming video shots with audio.

Of course the owners manual looks like a novel but I just used the quick start guide to get going.
 
old kodak 3200, takes decent pics however the battery holder cap broke and is currently tapped on. I'll be getting another before going on vacation next month but have no idea what yet. Im not a real big photography nut so something with extra memory and the $250.00 range is what ill be looking for. Suggestions?
 
canon elph powershot s100, something like 2.1 MP, the first elph digital. On the cutting edge 4 years a go, a little outdated now. I'll probably put it up on ebay, I see these still going for $100+ with a few accesories (which I have). Don't really use it anymore anyways.
