Tattoos and muscle

Couldn't decide which forum would be most appropriate for this question so sorry to those who wanna bitch about it.

I have an appointment this saturday for my first and probably the only tattoo I will ever get, a US Navy anchor on my mid-upper arm to shoulder. Well, it just occured to me that it might take away from the muscle appearance of my arm. Do you guys think it affect how the medial head of the "horseshoe" of my triceps stands out? Or the deltoid upper arm tie-ins? I want the tattoo but, at the same time, my arms are my best bodypart and I don't want to dull the muscle separations or more importantly the depth and curves.

Do upper arm tattoos have that effect?

dude dont worry about it, i have a tatt on my shoulder and it looks fine, and the anchor is not gonna cover a whole lot, mine is a giant black circle and it looks fine, so get er done if you want it, dont let the fact that it may make the muscle seperation less defined stop you if u really want it.

WOW, how old are you? You mind me asking, you in the Navy?

33. Yes, been in the Navy 8 years now.

Someone do me a favor here and enlighten me because I don't get it. What the hell is shocking or odd about the question? By Radar's response I'm guessing it is my choice of tattoo. Do the cool kids frown on anchors nowadays? And, if so, what about Marine tattoos because I've spent at least half my time with the green side. Still don't think I earned the right to a Marine tat though and wouldn't want one as I'm proud to wear my Navy's anchor. I've earned it and don't give a f### if a civilian thinks its tacky. I'll wear it with pride. Nonetheless, I'm still curious if this is why some of you are giving me shit.

a good tattoo artist will find a way to contour the design along your muscle.

Props for all your service man. I think what people are saying is, to put it bluntly, you're crying over nothing. Meaning its not like you're getting your arm sleeved in tatts, its just an anchor and you're worried about it impeding your muscle definition. Just get it and don't worry about it.

Captain FT hit the nail right on the head!!

Respect for the service man I was more like 'just get the tat if you want it'

Plus unless your an amputee you'll always be able to flex your opposite bad boy

One thing to consider.
An small anchor for a dingy, will turn into a huge anchor for a carrier once you grow!

Get the tat you want. your not a kid going out to be cool. Sounds like you know what you want and why!

Any Ink will draw attention away from the muscle. But it wont overshadow it to badly.

Not a dumb question at all in my opinion. I work too effing hard on my body to cover it up with stuff. Everyone's different though. I'll die with 0 tats, some people wish they were born with them.

D

get that tat bro..i got a fairly good sized one on my left arm and it runs half way across bicep and tricep..looks great

i regret having tats. infact i just missed a really big bb opportunity and was told on the sideline the tats are the only reason. i have a lot of them though.

I am against tats because eventually you'll regret it IMO

Still not a dumb question...I think it's a perfectly valid question

**moving this to a forum that's more appropriate. Next time though, if you know a mod's gonna bitch about it, I suggest you post in a more appropriate forum.

I respect your opinion, but I also debate how the decision to get a tattoo, which you may regret later, is different from any other decision which you may regret later? How about marrying, or buying a house in a particular city, or joining a certain church, or choosing a certain career? Seems to me that a tattoo which is later on unwanted, isn't nearly as big a problem as the fruits of other decisions. What if you lease a BMW for 3 years, and figure out after 10 months that you really wanted a Chevy 4x4? That's certainly a bigger thing to be stuck with than ink, in my opinion...

Believe me I DON'T MEAN that anyone should decide one morning they want a sleeve, and go at lunch time to get it started. I thought carefully about whether or not I wanted my tattoo, and I mean it was 20 years between the time I first thought about it and when I actually got it.

I highly doubt that a decision like careers or marriage is comparable to getting a tattoo...

What's your job in the Navy?

I'm a Medical Corps officer and a general physician.

Thanks for your input guys. Three to four hours from now, I'll be inked! I think I'll switch it to my right arm, which has slightly less fullness and less deep cuts and separation than my left arm. That way the ink might distract from the slight asymmetry.

Awesome bro. You should post up pics of the finished product.

I have a sleeve, half my back and my ribs done and some writing across my chest. I like my tats and I dont regret them. Unless your going to compete it really doesnt take that much away from muscle definition. Plus there is also the other arm unsleeved and my other side of my back and ribs that have no tats :D

unless you're going to compete, and have a serious chance at turning pro (which you don't), I wouldn't worry about it taking away from the appearance of your muscles. The layman won't notice or give a shit.

Why work hard on your body just to mark it up with graffiti?

I was thinking about tattooing abs on my stomach.

I hate doing abs and miss eating food.

That reminds me of those T-shirts with abs screen-printed..... I think this gives me an idea for a good prank: I'll get a shirt printed with a hairy beer belly and man-boobs, go where there are a whole lot of fit people and walk around and be seen, and then take the shirt off :FRlol:

Seriously, in the movies & TV, they do airbrush abs and other details to enhance musculature.

I am sure you don't know anything about makeup cause if you did you would know it is really not that hard to cover up tats for photo shots stage etc. Most of the tanners do a good job covering it up add in a full coverage foundation and bye bye tats.

I have one tat almost 6 years later I still don't regert it. I am thinking about getting another one took my almost 5 years to come up with another suitable idea and then placement.

if your unsure about it dont have it done, this is something you will wear for your lifetime you dont wanna be regretting it after the excitement wears off after a few weeks...

Same here... Mine is 3 years (got it at 40), and no regrets at all. In fact, I'm going Wednesday to get it sharpened up. When I got my nipples pierced (when it was still edgy), everyone said I was crazy, and I'd feel stupid later... There would be situations when I'd be unable to take my shirt off, and all kinds of negative sh*t about it. When is "later"??? It's been 20 years, and now they're at 6g, and I take my shirt off all the time.
