Suprised myself with deadlift PR's

I'm on a 5x5 program, did 185lbs because it was my first time and with nothing to judge with. Got done with my 5 sets and decided to go for more. I put 225lbs on thinking I was going to get about 2. Well I cranked out 8 reps easily at 225lbs on my 6th set.

Keep in mind, I'm 5'6" and 135lbs.

So what do you think my max could be?

yeah the 5x5 program is kind of motivating in itself which helps. Probably going to up the Deads to 200lbs for each of the 5 sets next time.

And thanks for the props.

from what you gave it could be anywhere from 275 up to 315. this differs for everyone

Well here's this weeks results

Deadlift
10-135, 5-200, 5-205, 5-225, 5-235, 3-275

So all them haters that said 275 max....:p cause I knabbed 3 good reps at the end of my 5x5

Oh, and this was the first time I decided to go strapless (excluding the 275 set)

Re 5x5's

Hi guys I am new to posting here have been reading the last couple of days. I am curious on the 5x5 what weight compared to what your 1rep max do you lift? And also do you pryamid the weight up each week or not?

TIA
Clint

I dont really compare my 5x5s to any of my 1 rep maxes. Just use a weight that gives you a nice pump on every set. As for the pyramiding each week, usually I would not advise this. Stick with the same weight all through the lift so that you can up that weight by 5-10lbs the next week. Yesterday, the only reason I kept building/pyramiding weight was because my roommate finally grew balls and wanted to see what he could do, and well I had to out do him:D

See how you like 185, if thats too light on the first set up it to 200. I'd say keep it there for the first week and then if you felt like 200 was still too light, go for 215-225 the next. From there I would only keep up'ing by 10lbs to reduce the pleateau effect.

surprises are always NICE. Good job man. Eat big someday, caffienate yourself and pull something big! Let us know...

Well I went with 185 today followed by pullups and some other stuff. I guess next week I will go with 195. How long do most of you stay on a 5x5?

I plan on staying with the 5x5 for at least 6 months. You need to stick with it to see gains (just like any other program)

Will do. Not sure if I can keep increasing at that level though. 10 lbs per week for six months will come out to about a 240 lb increase which is a good bit over my max. Is there a point where you just try and go heavy to test a new max?
