Starting treadmill running / Possible knee issue

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to lose some weight so in addition to diet, a few days ago I began running on a treadmill. Now the front part of my left knee feels a little strange. Is this just to be expected since I'm working them harder than usual, or should I give it a break for a little while?

I did 10 minutes of warmups and 2 minutes of cool down....the actual workout was 45 min varying from 3 to 5.5mph.

I did stretch a little but honestly probably not enough.

Age: 24
Weight: 206
Height: 5'11

it happens to alot of heavy people bro take it easy and either cut out the running for a while for biking, rowing or stair stepper or just alternate it.

swimming is great cardio too.

Im only 15 and I get knee and shin pain easily when running its kinda worrying, not so bad atm but when I was up to 185 I couldnt run for more that like 5 mins without fuckin painful shin splints lol

I reckon you are just getting some inflamtion. If your stomach can handle it, try a couple of Advil 30 minutes before you start and then a two more a few hours after you finish.

Thanks for the input. I have been taking some ibuprofin before and after...which does make it feel fine. Once it wears off though the knee still feels a bit off.

Have you ever actually injured your knee? I did some damage to my knee through years of playing netball and I noticed I occasionally used to get pain in the knee from the pressure placed on the joint when running. However, after losing some weight (thus relieving the amount of pressure placed on the joint) and getting my fitness level up, I've found I don't really get that pain anymore.

Also, if you find that the ibuprofen is helping, try getting a topical analgesic/painkiller which contains ibuprofen. It'll help for the pain and you won't get any of the gastrointestinal side effects.
