starting my homebrew operation (beer, not gear)

my buddy and i are going to go pickup a home-brewing kit and make our first batch of beer tonight.

i have done plenty of research on it, watched numerous videos/dvd's, and scoped out my brother-in-law's home setup.

however, i will make a far better beer than him.

he was doing the bare basics...we're going to go a bit further.

I've always wanted to try this as well, but my wife and her home decor
always got in the way. And the Garage is too hot to brew..

the setup is costing us $120 (split) and ~$30 for the ingredients.

it averages out to 50-something cents per beer.

if you are making an ale, it has to ferment at room temp...your house should be ok.

i dont know what kind of setup you are thinking of....it's not like you are going to have a large copper still in your living room or anything....

after you brew the wort (the water, grains, hop, etc mixture), you put it (and more water) in a container to ferment. you can use a glass carboy or a plastic carboy (looks like a bucket paint comes in), doesnt really matter.

go place that to ferment in a dark, room temperature (mid 60's to mid 70's) spot, let it sit, then transfer to another container to rack, then bottle.

your wife doesn't own every square inch of the house, does she?

you should definitely do it.
 
A friend of mine does this, man I love going over to his house. He always has a 'new' brew fro me to taste.

He made his entire setup using half kegs for the fermenting compartments, and has four kegorators running a different brew at all times. He's part of some club with a bunch of hmoe-brewer's, I would like to try my hand at it if I had the time.

how is it 'back woods redneck' to brew your own beer?

brewing at home is not the same as brewing hooch in your shed. it is two totally different things...and this isnt done for profit.

if you had the time? it will take you about two hours to cook the wort, and the rest of it involves just letting it sit.

it should be ideal for you, especially if you dont have much time. just cook the shit up, let it ferment, bottle, and wait 2 weeks or so, then drink it up.

i would rather drink steel reserve all night than even smell that shit.

and if you are just about beer for getting drunk, you should be drinking steel reserve. it's 8.1%

my first brew is going to be a stout, because it can be a bit more forgiving, and i dont have to worry about things like clarity, and it can hide any potential off-setting flavors a bit easier.

not to say it's going to taste like shit, but it is just easier for a noob, like myself, to play around with.

my buddy is going to keystone tomorrow to snowboard, and he took 2 5 gallon jugs with him to fill up at one of the natural springs out there (no, he is not just dipping them in a creek...they have these little brick huts with plumbing that is tapped directly into an underground spring).

natty ice tastes better than natty light imo

steel reserve is the worst tasting of the malt liquors. OE high gravity is 8.0% and actually tastes pretty good. smells like shit, but tastes ok

LOL @ my garage being 60's to 70's other than Winter time at night..
It would need to be inside with the A/C for most of the year down here.

I think I own like 16.25 sq inches out in the garage on a shelf..

I've seen home brewing done on an episode of Good Eats on the food network with the 5 gal plastic fermenters, so I know what to expect mostly.

In reality, 99% of home brews turn out NOT tasting as good as your average quality brewery's beer. They have millions in quality control and machinery to make the stuff. And good beer is about using very good ingredients and having consistent processes and conditions. Both are hard to come by for most home brewers.

I would do it just for the fun of making your own stuff, not with an expectation that my brew was going to be better than a good quality micro brew, or even a good mass produced one.

oh, this is 99.9% about having fun doing it. i dont have any expectations of being the next beer mogul or anything. it's just about the process of doing it on your own.

we have a bottle capper and a bunch of bottles we recycled ourselves. you buy beer caps by the pound and use the bottle capper to put them on.

looks simple enough.

frankly, i would rather put my stuff in a cornelius keg than bottle it, but it is better to age/prime in bottles than in kegs, plus you cant exactly lug a cornelius keg around with you wherver you go. even if one of your buddies has a kegerator, the hookups for a corny are different than that of a standard keg. so, no dice.

It's the process of learning about it and getting all the equipt ment together that I'm thinking will be time restraining.

I home brewed a stout once, and it turned out really well. I am going to do it again some day, just don't have the space for it atm. I need a friend like pdaddy's though, well not really I would just get drunk and fat lol.
