I love them both and feel like a maniac when I leave the gym after doing each. They are both daunting and make my workouts struggles (especially on Wednesday of a 5X5).

Just thought I would see who thought which was harder.

p.s. - I already know they are different exercises, so please don't point that out to me.........

i think it'll be squats for everyone intermediate who's squats and dead aren't a difference of 235 lbs... it'd still be squats all the way.. but i gotta love deads..

Squats are much harder due to the fact that you start with the weight ON TOP of you and any mistake can lead to problems...
Deads are much easier, just stare @ the bar and when u feel ready, PULL THAT SHIT!

Squats will always be harder for me......I'm just not built to squat, I've trained them harder than everything else over the eyars to keep them in proportion, but for me, they'll always be much harder than deadlifts, which are very natural to me.

The lift wich causes you to use more mental and physical effort than the outher, is just a couple of the many reasons why 1 lift may be harder than the outher. It also depends what you mean by "wich is harder" Do you mean wich is harder as in, wich has the biggest impact on recovery times, do you mean wich is harder as in, wich is the most challengin from a mental perspective ect. As i'm sure the squat is tougher than the dealift in some respects, and the dealift tougher than the squat in outher respects.

same with me. squats are harder because of the thinking; deads you just rip of the floor and yell.

Yet another vote for squats from me. Like others have said, they're a lot more form-sensitive than deads, and the lack of an opportunity to reset between reps means that if the first one feels weird the rest probably will too.

The deadlift is harder for me. Maybe it's because I just started doing them. When I squat I feel like I'm centered with the weight. When deadlifting, I feel like I'm reaching out for it and I'm a little off balance. I can squat 100 lbs. more than I can DL??? Better soon I hope!

Squats are more difficult to me. A miss on a deadlift means that you just put the weight down where it came from. I miss on a squat usually means that you're stuck under the weight until your spot finds a way to pry it off of you.

I feel like I could deadlift all day long.

Agreed as well...

MY CNS takes a beating after Deads...

But then again im DLing 435x4.

i equally love them both...

For me its squats...due to the fact that i am 6'5" i got a long way to squat. Deads are easier for me, but my preference is Stiff Legged Deadlifts by far!!!!!

I find SLDL relatively comfortable but don't tend to do it much. How many de-weight the bar on the floor when doing SLDL to justify the name 'deadlift'?

Squats hold no fear for me. I've yet to find a weight that is worth taking a shot at that I've not been able to shrug off when stuck. With a squat, I go down with the weight and either I come back up or I don't. Simple.

Deadlifts still scare me. I sometimes feel that the top half of my body is just going to slide off the bottom half. I read of people saying that you can just let go of a deadlift but I'd rather shrug off a squat than just let go of a dead and have all the muscle suddenly go from full effort to zero.

I see the squat as a technical lift and the deadlift as more of a total effort. Definitely deads.

Agree...

Yes, I always de-weight the bar between sets.

I vote deadlift. I like to squat and while they are hard, it by no means makes me feel like I do after I deadlift. Some times after the deads, I want to crawl up in the fetal position and cry, haha My whole body feels like it was run over by a train after deadlifting...........

I have to agree for me its deads too. Always been a natural squatter and strong at that, but deadlift I have to work at it. I think I am hampered at deadlifts because my arms are not very long compared to my height. I am 6 foot tall, but have met guys several inches shorter than me with longer arms. I think having nice long monkey arms might be good for doing deads!

deadz. Take longer for me to recover. Plus I don't do them anywhere near as much or regularly as squats. BUT, the squat is more of a mind fucking to me. All mental with me unfortunately. I have to keep my head straight

For me DLs primarily due to my squirrely lower back. I tend to do my DLs on the smith machine (Yes I know, Mr Smith is ghey..) but it just feels safer right now. I'm working on that tho.

squats
just feels like it's such a LONG way down
plus like others have said I really have to keep form in check when squatting whereas deadz once I'm set to pull...I pull

Just bend down, grab the bar, look at the ceiling and scream on the way up.

Then drop it while some skinny fag is trying to talk to you.....just walk away....walk away....

My vote is for deads. I have been squatting for 23 years, but deads I only kept consistnetly in my workouts for about the last 5 years, and I don't have the most co-operative back either. A slight form error means a zinger right to the lower back that can put me out of commission for a few days.

Now SLDL's I can do all day. :)

it depends on how you do the lift... a max, 5x5 etc... i personally hate 5 heavy sets of 5. it takes too long and sucks, but its worth it

i also hate a HIT set of squats. 1 set to failure plus negatives, but its also worth it.

if you like doin an exercise, most of the time you are doin it wrong... lol as in its too easy

like when guys curl in front of the mirror and shit, lol

there are some guys, most on this board, who like to lift and endure the pain of lifting, which is good.

Ya, totally agree with that.

I find squats are harder but like others said it takes me longer to recover from deadlifts.

I personally hate squats more. When I do squats, even with my warm up of only 135, I feel like my hams and glutes are about to explode. I'll do power cleans, hang cleans, and deadlifts all day long, but I hate, HATE doing squats. Oh well. Too bad you pretty much HAVE to do it.

i would think this is because with deads, you can go heavy as hell and just rip it. where as squats are alittle harder to get heavier weights up for most people. therefore, since you are lifting more weight with deads, they will be more taxing on the system.

I would think it depends on your body type, for me being tall and with a long waist Deads are much harder. I love suqats and find them very comfortable once I get in the grove.
