Squat Spotting

The boobs if it's a hot female (j/k)

Arms underneath squatter's armpits or hips otherwise

Hands on their hips...mostly helping with stability if they start to sway but you can also provide some lift if they really need it. Don't bother touching them unless they need it...just keep your hands outside and behind their hips ready to help if needed and follow their squat movement with your legs.

dont ever touch someones hips while spotting..you would spot the same way you do for bench you support the bar the best place is under the armpits..if the weight is truly heavy one spotter on each side of the bar as well as one behind you..KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF THE PERSON SQUATTING..its hard enough staying in the groove with a heavy weights you dont need to touch them and thorw them out of whack

If a squatter is wearing a belt, you'll have a harder time spotting them when grabbing their hips.
My spotter reaches his arms under mine and then grabs the bar when i go to rack it to help guide it in.
If i fail, i really don't care if he has to grab my chest to help me up, but he's never had to.

thtas cuz youre strong :)
also say someone gets stuck in the hole grabbing from te hips will do nothing its easier to grab the bar or the spot nearest to the bar

I said hips...but I guess I really meant right above the hips around the lower waist. You still might not agree though. It'd drive me crazy if someone was all around my armpits. If I fail and need real help getting back up then fine...do wahtever it takes...but bailing someone out of trouble is different from giving them a spot. I don't go super heavy or beyonbd my abilities...never do 1rm so I've never been in trouble...only ever needed a little help keeping steady as I pushed through that last rep.

nobody touches me EVER when spotting me unless i fail, so at that point, i don't care what they grab as long as it saves me.
you're spotter should be ready to help, but not touching.

place ur hands under their armpits but do not actually touch them. squat down with them.

if they start to fail put pressure on their armpits and squat up with them like a front squat. it works best if you press your crotch into their buttox

spotters can be there for mental support as well if you trust the person behind you.. me i do hit 1RM maxes and train alone so i use 2 spotters on each side of the bar as well as one behind me who doesnt get near me at all unless i yell for help..its hard asking for spots whe somene doesnt know how to do it..i think this is a really good thread..

personally i used to just let the bar roll off my back and fall onto the rack but i feel it attracts too much attention not to mention ive bent numerous bars by doing that...

when you do need a serious spot spotting from the hips or sligtly above will not be effective since the weight can just collapse the arch in your back and get you inot serious trouble

Totally agree...I guess I was speaking from my perspective of what I need when I squat. I rarely ever use a spotter because I know at worst I'll just have shitty form on the last rep or two and can always cut the set 1 rep short is i have any doubt. I can't remember the last time I've done less than 6 rep set anyway.

Some very good answers there guys. Okay, let me call it back to you to see if I got it......Squat down with the guy. Have your hands under his armpits and ready to support if needed, but don't touch. Then, if he's failing, support him by being in very close and pushing up from the armpits and help him rack the bar. Is that correct?

Many thanks for the excellent replies.

yup, you got it. :)

I am going to say hips...About 10 years ago a buddy and I were heavy squatting in this shit hole gym in Somerville, MA - It was so hot in the place the mirrors would steam up and the rubber mats would get all wet with condensation...

Anyway, I was under 345 for a 3rd set (still the most I have ever squatted) - I was trying for a triple, but after one I went down and that was it...My buddy tried to spot from the hips, but that wasn't working - but a couple of the guys watching spotted the bar from either end. That was the only time I failed.

I think that was also the workout where my buddy ripped his satin sweatpants right down the ass crack while squatting...

My point is that you are going heavy - there isn't too much of a spot one guy is going to be able to give you. Best to have a couple of guys on standby so you don't end up on the floor with 45's all around you.

Later,

Bluesman

If they arent going to heavy (sets of 12 or more reps) you can actuallyget a few forced reps by standing slightly to the side and with one hand push up and back on the sternum and forward on the lower back.
