Sony drops PS3 price to $499, Microsoft expected to follow suit

well, all this about the 360 failure rate is news to me.........but not surprising either. Both sony and microsoft try to cut so many corners because they're trying to fit 5 years of computer processor technology into a system "now"......meaning that the system will still seem high tech in 3-4 years.........so of course everything is just overcooking. I'd rather them make something stable..........the dreamcast is still my favorite system of all time.

there's nothing bloody wrong with DVD's in the first place.

I consider myself into electronics and gadgets, but I do not have a high def dvd player nor a 1080p television.

My 1080i tv and upconvert dvd player serves me well.

Why pay upwards of 10 times the $$$ for something which only gives a minimal difference?

It's all about the novelty factor for many people. They must be cool and have the latest and greatest thing to show off.

I'm happy I kept my PS3 after seeing Sony's e3 conference this year, most notably the Killzone 2 footage that is actual gameplay this time around, and still in pre alpha stage to boot.

You damn fanboi

Actually the gameplay footage in that trailer was very minimal and not much more impressive than say a Medal of Honor game. Killzone2 will be mediocre just like the first one they overhyped.

Actually they had a lot of good showings this year of games that will be here starting the end of this quarter; not to mention some exclusives over Microsoft this year, ie Unreal Tournament 3,

The dragon game where you battle in the air (dont know the name) looked really cool and unique.

I've never cared for UT games so that doesn't bother me.

Metal gear solid 4 MAY be a good game IF THEY EVER RELEASE IT. Seriously it will be Q4 2008 before that thing comes out. I've yet to see any actual gameplay.

Hate to say it, but Microsoft has Sony beat by a huge margin on games.
Perhaps 4-5 years down the road once developers become familar with the PS3's hardware it will do well, but until then it's going to be a flop.

Heck even Madden is running at 60 fps on the xbox and only 30 on the PS3. That stings.

A couple of other things- take a look at any gaming message board site (gamespot.com/forums, ign.com, etc) and you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere near the amount of complaints (if any) about the PS3 hardware compared to the Xbox 360. .

That's because only 100 people bought the PS3 !!!

hahahahahaha

Hell, gamespot.com has a page stickied specifically for 360 hadware failures with replies numbering in the thousands. Microsoft apparently took a big step backward in the hardware dept. from their previous console, while Sony took a big step forward with their's.

I agree. They tried to cut corners. After mine broke I was almost ready to write off Microsoft. Fortunately they did step up and fix the problem. (You don't offer a 3 year warranty unless you've solved the issue). Plus them offering free repairs really put my faith back in them.

The problem was with the CPU and GPU becoming extremely hot. It takes a while but over time the board they rest on begins to warp. This in turn breaks the sodering loose. They decided to add an additional heatsink and I hope brace the board better. Once the 65nm chipset is released it will help even more with the cooling.

Although even then I'd never heard of anyone I knew having a problem with the PS2, myself included.

Do you mean PS3?
Because there were numerous failures with the PS2 when it first came out.

Also, people like to cite that there's no good games for the PS3.......uh....like there was anything even close to Resistance: FoM in the 360's launch lineup, or the entire year following it until Gears of War showed up (or maybe a little sooner if you want to count Dead Rising). The PS3 will have as many if not more AAA titles available in its first year than the Xbox 360 will have in its first two.

Resistance and ? Resistance and ?

What else do they have?

What other games is PS3 going to have that won't also be on xbox ?

There's a reason why so many PS3's are sitting on the shelf. NO GAMES.
Hopefully that will change for Sony this fall. The price drop was a very smart move on their behalf.

meh....I'm so over video games right now............everything coming out on the 360 is one player anyway........and I know they do that on purpose so that you have to get on xbox live to play multiplayer........what the fuck assholes?? The whole fun of video games is to sit in the same room as your buddies and watch their faces contort in learned helplessness as they realize that whatever move they make, whatever corner they come to............the click click of the sniper is waiting for them. And why did this go away? Because we let corporations like Sony and Microsoft into the business who's bottom line is their profit margins and not the consumers enjoyment.......meh........done with it!

It's the same way as it's always been, only we were too young to know better back then. If you adjust for inflation, systems were overall more expensive 10-20 years ago. And who could forget the overpriced paperweights that were Jaguar, Neo Geo, 3DO, etc. Hell even Sega CD for some. Nintendo ruled because Miyamoto (Mario creator) still had plenty of fresh ideas for young franchises, along with some good 3rd party support and the fact that as kids we ate anything up. Older gamers have much more refined and defined tastes.
There is more heated competition these days between giant companies, but there certainly is still some interesting stuff being developed. Also, all of big three's new consoles still have four controller ports, so true multiplayer isn't dead. The online aspect broadens the challenge pool. Hell, if that's bad then what are we doing on an internet chat board?

aap, I had a 360 for Gears but sold it after getting bored with the only AAA title in a year for the system, and arguably still today as far as exclusives go. And yes, many ports run better on the 360, with the exception of Oblivion. As massive as that game is, it only proves that the fault ultimately lies with developers. You could also fault Sony for their complex design though too, however avoidable or not it may have been. Some games due this year look impressive (Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Heavenly Sword) which is a start. I do still have Halo 3 preordered though, so a 65nm 360 looks very enticing as well.

Okay after watching E3-07 this past weekend (had to record it since I was busy when it showed initially) I retract my statements. Some of the PS3's games they showed do look impressive.

Within the next couple months I will either buy another 360 and system link it with my current one to play with friends, or I will purchase a playstation3 to play some of the exclusives not coming to xbox.

Decisions decisions decisions....

I just had another friend(who bought his xbox360 a month after me)have to send his in for repairs a SECOND time.

I traded in mine yesterday for store credit and I'm going to get a "wii" if I can ever find one of the fuckers.

I'm fairly confident they've solved the issue. I mean you don't offer a 3 year warranty if you haven't. At least his repair should be free. Hopefully this fix is being implimented as we speak, into new consoles and the failure rates will cease.

Are Wii's still hard to find? I must have lucked out when I got mine the week after launch, without a preorder. I've been playing Resident Evil on it while my xbox is being fixed.

What is your opinion on the PS3 ?

Was way too expensive, not to bad now with the price drop.

I don't think I'll get one though, I think sony doomed themselves this generation by charging to much.

They don't have nearly the support they used to have and Sony is notorious for showing bullshit "real time" game play.

yes the wii is still impossible to find.
