So today I have to fire someone

She's been with the company for 7 yrs. When I first became the manager, I ended up transitioning her out of a supervisory role because she couldnt meet the expectations. Since then it's been downhill. This is the same one who told me "slavery is over you know" in an email.

Anyway, I never enjoy doing this but people bring these things on themselves despite many chances and opportunities to turn things around. This should be interesting. I think the entire place is going to be like WTF because no one knows besides me, HR and the VP of Ops (my boss). I hope she goes peacefully. lol

Good luck with that! It is hard enough to simply discipline employees or give them their yearly review.

BTW there is a good thread about cheap firearms floating around here the last day or so.....jk

I'd tell her that she should consider herself lucky to have lasted 7 years. She would have been gone after her "slave" comment.... IMO.

Good luck. Sucks to be you today for sure!

I know the feeling... Since I've been here (bout 2 months) I have fired 9 people and had to seriously knock a few dicks in the dirt. Not easy, but you get over it fast.

I like the approach, "Obviously you are not happy here so I think it best to let you go someplace where YOUR HAPPINESS is better reached."

If that ain't enough, then you say, "Because of your performance this just isn't working out and I thought it best that you be free to go someplace where your talents are best utlized."

And if that STILL ain't enough, "Sorry... but this just isn't working out. Your performance does not meet the company's standards."

Short and sweet is best.

Wait until tomorrow, then give a heart shaped box of chocolates and kiss her on the mouth as you throw her ass out.

it's easier for a woman to fire someone than for a man to, because of the precendent set down by the fore-mothers and married wimmins across the nation...

just change the company locks and have a new employee sitting in her desk when she finally makes it inside.

and if she gets mad you can make her feel like a loser piece of shit by calling her needy, etc

free at last. free at last. THANK GOD ALMIGHTY! I'M FREE AT LAST!

After you fire a few people it gets better. By the time I left my last supervisor job I was like donald trump, I actually enjoyed it.

Cheers,

I'm an Admin Asst. and my boss is the administrator of the entire hospital where I work. He offered me a raise in Dec to assume a supervisory role over 4 of the other Assts here in the Administration building. I took it and I caught someone stealing in Jan and had to can her. God it was a trainwreck. First she stood up and acted threatening, then came unglued and started sobbing.

I dearly hope Smurf's goes better than my first one did.

I enjoyed firing people.

they always deserved it and were wasting my fuckin $$$$.

if they weren't cut out for the business, they usually knew it to begin with and just reconfirmed.

my partner could never do the firing. i was always the one who axed people

Ive done this before both in this job and other mananger positions I've had. It always sucks but yeah, they bring it upon themselves./like i said, many many chances.

Go ahead Smurf! Firing a government employee, and apparently a sista, at that.

I'm scared of you.

Must be great for a single mom to come home to her child and say she got fired?

:worried:

Happened to me and yea, it sucked but by far, it was far worse, as a single mom to come home to an empty apartment because I had lost custody of my kids because "that month" the judge had an issue with the fact that I had to work so many hours to pay our bills. Can you imagine? I mean what kind of a single mother goes to open a gym at 5AM with 4 kids in tow for 8 dollars and hour? Shit, was even worse when I worked those hours as a certified personal trainer making between 15 and 25$ p/hr.... still lost custody.

Let's all count our blessings.

What I've found to be interesting is that those who are most concerned about keeping their jobs are the ones who have the least to be concerned about. In other words, they bust their asses. Conversely, when you fire someone who 100% brought it on themselves, they are TOTALLY caught off-guard.

as soon as someone develops a negative mindset, doesn't want to be there, only there for the paycheck, isn't going to improve...

you need to replace them with someone who DOES want to be there. And has a POSITIVE attitude.

You're not firing her. She fired herself.

People like her need to learn things the hard way. She's pissed cuz this is all she's achieved in life? Boo Hoo. Should've partied less in your 20's. Her life's happiness is not your responsibility.

I've always been one to give people social consideration, however I don't pay the bills. Different strokes as they say.

Yes.

Now, she has earn more money by finding another n00b to knock her up.

She should've thought of that before she had the kid. She's an adult - she's responsible for her own life, just like you are her.

Somewhere in africa - a mother is being raped, and her child slaughtered.

When American mothers are being raped and killed on a daily basis - i'll start caring. Until then, people are the products of the bad decisions they make in life. Don't feel "sorry" for them. Tell them stop whoring and partying in their 20's.

Nah, i've worked with some of the toughest bosses around. I've even worked under Micheal Eisner.

Just have a good personality, ENJOY your work, help others, and do the best you can. "Manager yourself".

You can get away with murder. I would just tell my boss "I'm taking Friday off. I have a tooth ache, yeah, that's it". (laughs). "Fine, get out of here!".

You can't do that if you're a prick who's lousy at his job and annoys everybody.

Razorgunz is dead on. Once you have an unhappy employee (for WHATEVER reason) there is no bringing them back. It is best for both the employer and the employee to send them on their merry way.

I also consider many factors when deciding who goes and who stays and who I recommend for promotions (a high percentage of employees in other areas start on the floor here). A single mother (single parent period) will ALWAYS get top consideration. In my experience you will not find a harder working, more reliable employee than a single parent.

Just make sure that building security are on standby before you do the dirty deed.

That's discrimination!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What if that single parent is not the most qualified for the job? Do you still favor them just because you've been in their shoes? I think the people who are best suited for the job should ALWAYS get top consideration. But I know that's not always the case because of discriminating motherfuckers playing politics. Your other more qualified employees will resent that by the way.

For me to hire less-qualified employees will hurt MY bottom line and cause MY ASS to get shit-canned. Since I have taken over I have increased production by over 200%. You think that happened by accident?

And for the record... I ride the single parents' asses HARDEST.

I couldnt have said it better myself.

The whole thing was very uneventful. She didnt really say anything. I think she may be scheming though. I have heard she has or will contact an attorney. Oh well. Her time and effort would be better spent finding another job that is more suited to her. We will certainly be replacing her with someone who wants to work.

Is your's an employment-at-will state? Ga is, so firing people is generally easy here, but I know a lot of Northeastern states are not.

yes MD is an at-will state. plus we involve the corporate legal counsel on every termination prior to going through with it so Im not worried.

There is no reason for you to worry, that does not mean that you will not be involved in litigation in these cases which may be stressful. They are very separate issues since you don't pay the legal bills. However, that is why management typically gets more money for their time. The good news is typically the company will settle.

they always say that. they can barely afford their mortgages and cars, let alone hire a $300/day lawyer. Especially when unemployed.

10 bucks she'll take her dogshit personality to another job. Pretending to be the best thing since sliced breads. These rat racers, who themselves haven't found any happiness or goals in life, just go through job after job - blaming everyone but themselves for being where they are in life.

Foreigners > American workers.

you've just described 95% of the work force.
Most people go to work just for their paycheck. You don't fire someone because they're negative, you fire them because they are not producing.

Not sure how it is in the US, but if someone is fired here, we have a orgnization that fights the co for you at NO COST. They supply the lawyer etc.
Most judges will take the side of the employee unless then steal or harm another employee.
I'm so happy I work for a kind company who doesn't dispose of people b/c they are not positive every day!!!!!

I agree, most of the greatest scientist and inventors were very introverted (appearing negative) - they would be fired in today's world.

You can be introverted and very VERY productive. Not all occupations require people skills. So if you have a position where someone is ill-suited to function at maximum capacity then why not let them go about their way to find a job where they will be more productive which would = happier?

Every state is at-will except for two of them. Being an at-will employer really doesn't protect you from anything. There is always some claim they can make.

That's why documentation is key and I'm sure smurfs documentated the fuck out of performance issues before firing....

Yep, it's VERY easy to have documentation about chronic tardiness when you have print outs from the system showing every single tardy since last May. There's really nothing to argue there, which is probably why she had nothing to say at the time we presented her with the termination letter. Then I had to walk her over to her desk and stand there nearby while she cleaned out her personal belongings. Then I told her to give me her security badge/ Then she left. The end. I'm eager to begin the recruiting process to hire her replacement.

dude she was fired for chronic tardiness and absenteeism. there is nothing to argue when the evidence comes straight from the electronic payroll timekeeper and the Avaya phone log in system. now, that doesnt mean she wont choose to do something ourtrageous like file a suit for something else. anyone can sue anyone else for whatever they want.

yes!! some people are just more trouble than they are worth. if you compare the value they add to the trouble they cause and their failure to meet the expectatoins, sometimes they just arent a good fit. Im not obligated to continue to employ those who dont want to work and who are miserable day in and day out. negativity in the workplace is like a cancer. it spreads and seriously negatively impacts the morale and productivity of the entire team.

Negativity is toxic but again, not a reason to fire someone. If that were the case, over 1/2 of my office would be out on their asses.
Low moral and low productivity is usually a symptom of bad managment. Not saying thid is the case here, but it's upper managments job to keep moral up.

right but negativity certainly puts you in the spotlight though , doesnt it? why put yourself under the microscope like that? it's called a problem employee. no manager wants to deal with that. there's a job to do. that's the bottom line. Id like as little drama as possible to get in the way of getting the job done and keeping people motivated, happy, and supported. people who are an obstacle to achieving that level of cohesiveness are not welcome.

sorry but if half your workforce are miserable bastards, then I feel sorry for your company/

lots of angry people at my work. Not a lot in my dept, but mostly in other areas. Again, in my co's case, it's the hiring of bad managers.
I still went in every day with a smile, a good morning and a good night and no one every does that. Lots of old miserable people at my work.
I believe I'm one of the youngest in my office.

true Ive seen my share of managers who have no business managing. poor management and supervisory support is dreadful. everyone needs support from a competent and understanding boss. when you dont get that, you dont get far. Ive seen numerous people start a job and quit shortly after due to having bad or basically no supervisory support whatsoever. that's a damn shame.

But I still quit but it pissed me off bad to have to tell the nice manager I quit.

When I got fired my boss pretended that he didn't know what was going on.

I doubt that he was as clueless as he pretended, but he did kind of get fucked by the timing.

Ahh, good times.

i don't feel sorry when people - who seek jobs solely cuz of the paycheck - get fired.

Should've paid attention when their teacher in high school asked everybody 'want do you want to be in life'? Few actually achieve what they say.

Good to hear that she did not try and club you to death with your stapler. :)

I bet she;s just blowing smoke in regards to hiring a lawyer. It's prolly a typical knee-jerk reaction from anyone who gets canned. She'll find out that it's going to cost her a fortune to retain a lawyer and give up on the idea!
