Who stands on a platform and lowers the bar all the way to their shoetops? I'm not going this deep since I've never felt it added anything to the movement, but recently I noticed it does significantly lower the amount of weight I can use.

Last week I determined my SLDL 5RM is 240 which seems like quite a bit even to me. Should I be going lower? If so my 5RM is more like 210.

anya, I think of the SLDL as a more isolationary move. If you are doing it for hammy development, then I'm not sure going to the shoe tops means anything other than you're flexible. How does you SLDL compare to your 5rm squat or 5rm deadlift?

The ever-soliticous Spatticus. :D

I'm coasting on the squats since I've already got a rap video butt, but I did 265 X 5 but only went down to one inch above parallel. I expect I could have done to 1 inch below but I'm trying to keep my butt out of it.

Deads are very weak since my arm strengh is very poor. I've managed 205 X 1.

I was concerned about the SLDL's since the poundage seemed pretty high. I wanted to be sure I hadnt gotten weight happy and was cheating myself.

The trouble with this is that often when people think they are going really deep, all they are doing is rounding their back to get the bar lower. This obviously has no benefit for the Hamstrings, but does put the lower back in a potentially vulnerable position. Whatever depth you go to, try to retain the arch of your back.

Soliticous isn't a word. lol

Good point FatRat, I flex my hanstrings at the top and keep them flexed tight the whole time. I also arch pretty hard. Between the two, my ROM gets cut pretty short. My hammies dig it though.

I have a ghetto ass too, but I'm not operating under the illusion that it's all muscle. lol I just keep on squattin.

Damn you know what I mean, friendly! solicitus, solicitis? :o

My torso stays almost completely perp to the floor, shoulders back. It feels easy and natural for me to stay that way. My bf has the leaning way forward problem though. My have a short torso, strong lower back and longer legs.

What weight are you using for SLDL's spatts? You asked about my 5RM on squat and dead. What do my answers tell you?

If you are keeping you legs straight, you will be using very little glute, if any at all, but I guess yo know that from the way you are talking

yes you do..perfect example of a nice ghetto ass:p and good thing you dont stop squattin...it would be a very sad day for alot of ppl.;)

Well, your deads don't have much to do with arm strength, and the fact that you SLDL more than you DL shows there's a problem. Other than for hamstring hypertrophy, sounds like SLDL's are a wasted move for you, strength wise.

so·lic·i·tous ( P ) Pronunciation Key (s-ls-ts)
adj.

Anxious or concerned

Expressing care or concern

Full of desire; eager.

Marked by or given to anxious care and often hovering attentiveness.

Extremely careful; meticulous: solicitous in matters of behavior.

....lol.

Spatts, often marked by or given to anxious care and often hovering attentiveness, I do not have a video apart from my appearance on GGW june '01 after HS graduation. But I wasnt deadlifting on that one.

Yes I agree it is likely to be at least partially a form issue. Since I dont have a video of myself I'll have a few of my male helpers (dad & bf) look at the vids of proper dead form and then watch me closely. I'll get back to you on that.
