side raises for abs?

I want to work out the love handle area to try and slim it down after bulking for awhile. I've heard I shouldn't go too heavy because it will make the area grow into a larger muscle and bulge out. So what is a good weight and how many reps? I was holding a 45 lbs plate with a 3 sets of 30 but i was told to use a 20 lbs weight. it just seems so light and doesn't feel like it's doing anything.
thanks for any input!

the only way you will lose your love handles is diet and using more calories than youre taking in. Do a search on "spot reduction".

In combination with diet, try Yohimburn DF. Works great for me and seems to have helped other people on the board.

Agreed. Side raises will not get rid of love handles. However, I think side raises are great as a supplement to regular crunches and stuff.

And yeah, use as much weight as you like. I wouldn't worry about muscles bulging out on the side. I've never seen or heard of that as a real problem. And treat them like any other excercise. If 45 lbs have become too light, do them with a 55lb db, and keep your reps lower. Fuck this 20lb, 30-rep nonsense.
