Shows like 'Extreme Makeover' and 'The Swan'

Do you think it will improve one's view of self and realize that with enough self motivation and outside help (medical & procedures) almost anything could be done or make people feel even more helpless over the concept of perfection of self.

These shows completely infuriate me. We're finishing up work here and I had the TV turned on to American Idol. I turned it off when this trash came on. I think it's awful to call these people "ugly ducklings" and need this surgery to accept themselves. Has society truly stooped so low?

personally, i think shows like this are a disgusting reminder of how shallow and morally bankrupt this country is becoming.

instead of trying to better our entire self, be it physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually speaking, we look to television programming for guidance, as it was some kind of blessed, god-damn blueprint to live our lives by.

please calvin klein, mtv programming execs, and the marketing people at maxim/cosmo/us/people/etc how i should look, dress, talk, and act! please tell me how to spend my time and money; help me live a more commercially complete life.

america needs to turn off the tv and pickup some god damn books.

I would be interested in seeing the people who go on these shows a year later. I would bet that most of them probably slip back into their old habits and behaviour.

and another thing....i'm tired of people thinking all they need to do in life is look good, as if that is actually contributing something to society in general.

Wow.

I thought it would reveal the level of fake of "Hollywood" and the whole "Image" industry. While it does support a level negativity of perfect as an acceptable ideal it also shows that you can take anyone and make them into someone you may see in the media.

I would think that when you realize that it can all be man made and not natural one could grasp the concept of perfect is not what the media presents to us to believe.

Or maybe I'm expecting people to see out of the box too much.

Unforunately society has stoped that low and tries to make others think that physical beauty and money are all that matters and make it quick, self improvement is not in the language any more nor is human dignity and love of others for what they truly are.makes me very sad

You're expecting people to think logically. People can look at someone in Hollywood and know that what they see is fake, air brushed, or plastic, but they still see that as perfection. Unfortunately, that is what some people base their selfworth on, even if their brain tells them it is unrealistic.

I think its this kind of expectations that people think they HAVE to be before they are accepted as a beautiful woman or handsome man...
You guys put all these hot women in ur avatars..where are the avatars of "average" women?
