Shoulder Surgery

DSPO

New member
I posted this on the regular board but also hope to get input here. Back from my orthopedic yesterday and I need to have shoulder surgery. The procedure is called something like decompression and A/C. He said that I have subacromial impingement. He needs to remove my bursa, cut ½ inch and remove the scar tissue from my acromiom.

Has anyone had this surgery? I would like to know if it enabled you to workout again without any major issues. I am scheduled for surgery June 19 but am still considering if I am going to do it.

The bottom line is if it will allow me to begin to bench and do other shoulder exercises pain free then I will do it. If not and other complications occur then I will pass and live with the pain the rest of my life.

I am looking for results of people who have had this procedure performed and a discussion of the risks.

I have had orthopedic surgery, but not the kind you are contemplating. The surgery can be a big ordeal. You did get a second opinion right? What did that doctor recommend?

I had a pretty serious shoulder injury and eventually opted to undergoe surgery aswell. However, like
George said shop around - I got a WIDE variety of
opinions from the various doctors and physical therapists, being the hard head that I am; I probably
waited to damn long (despite the pain). Unfortunately,
I still experience pain on certain lifts, so I've had to
alter my routine. There's a surgeon that trains at my
gym, so I'll ask him about options for your particular
case. Good luck bro

Thanks Primo

I am scheduled for June 19...so any input prior would be great. What did you have done to your shoulders?

The Procedure is called Arthoscopic Subacromial Decompression AC Resection.

When I worked in a sports medicine clinic,we generally would see a rehab period of at least 8 weeks. After this, most of our patients would still have limitations in their strength.Unfortunately,I think many of them had been injected too many times In the joint space with hydrocortisone and the like, and by the time they got to us,serious damage was already there.Definitely get a second opinion. If there is a lrge teaching facility near you,all the better. If you want to e-mail me with general details as to the big cities near you,I will ask my old bosses(one of which was a team doc in the NFL) for some references in your area
good luck:angel:
