Should adult children who still live with their parents pay room and board?

if anybody in my extended family asked any of their children to pay rent, they would become the joke of the entire family

I stopped sponging off the parents when I was eighteen..They're an adult and should have the same responsibilities of other adults; Like college is an excuse for being a slacker/parasite....That government welfare check (student loan) is supposed to cover living expenses...not living plus partying and spring break expenses.

Not sure how it works in the US, but here in Canada...it's really hard to get student loans/grants if your parents make a decent income. The govt. basically says your parents should have been saving since you were born to be able to afford to help you out...there's a formula based on your parents' income when determining eligibility for student loans/grants.

So, if it's the same in the States, I think it's wrong to charge rent while your kids are in school. All you're going to do is saddle them with a crushing debt, or cause them to work so much that they don't do as well at school...risking dropout.

And here's a little more food for though: sure, you don't OWE your kids assistance while they are in school technically. You can say, ok...you're done high school..you're on your own now. See ya! But rembember that you are going to get very old, and probably sick someday. When that time comes, and you did the bare minimum for your children (getting them to age 17, as you were required to by law but no more)...how much do you think they're going to want to inconvenience themselves to help you in your time of need? Think on that for awhile.

Financial aid is "needs based" but anyone can get a student loan guaranteed by the government. We also have financial assistance laws in Ohio that mandate a child care for their parents...My parents expected me to take the life lessons I learned...the opportunities I was given and make a better life for myself.

That's messed up: if you can prove your parents did the bare minimum for you, you should be exempt. That, or be smart enough to move out of state/country if they weren't worth looking after.

Its one of those laws that isn't actually enforced because of medicare/medicade but I'll be damned before my mother lives in one of those shitty nursing homes paid for my medicare.

Word if you make your kids suffer - live poor, eat cheap fast food & become saddled for debt for years just to teach them something (whatever that is), they will do the same back.

How is that working out for ya?

My belief is that the purpose of the parents is to protect the child. I don't believe that making the child pay for rent / board (and spending it) counts as protecting the child.

These are all good responses, but since when is 20 a child? My understanding is that childhood ends at 18.
The more we coddle children, the more of a sense of entitlement they have in their adult life-leading them out of reality IMO.
I would be ashamed of myself to be a great big 20 year old and still having Mummy take care of me. For shame...

If you were working towards a degree in a city where the cost of living is downright exorbitant, how is not sensible that you live at home to keep debt down until you've completed your degree?
