Problem with non-Italians who didn't grow up in certain areas is this - a LOT of what you see in those movies (especially Sopranos) is based on some hardcore everyday realities. You would NEVER understand that unless you grew up around that element.

Simple as that. I know some people know what I'm sayin here, for better or for worse

I have seen the movies...goodfellas was one of my favs but I don't picture there is a whole lot of that going on as it use to before some of the big leaders like Gotti where either arrested or killed. I guess the best way for me to think of it is like an gang....I would never be so dumb as to think if your Italian then you go around dress in expensive suits, packing a gun, shirt unbuttoned to show all the gold chains, killing any one that disrespected you or your family, dealt drugs, etc.

You don't have to be "hard" to grow up around those types of Italians. I am only part Italian, and the Italian who started our family was the guy who came over and started up Estes Park in Colorado and then went to the Goldrush...etc. So, it was a LONG time ago when he came over on the boat.

My first love was a guy named Guissepe Rudolph Georgini. We got engaged and lived at his parents when he was in law school. To say that his parents were right off the boat was no exaggeration. They were fantastic people and hated the mob stereotypes and Italian boys who acted hard. His mom spoke 6 languages and had attended Oxford. His dad was a hoot and sold insurance. DAMN, the food was good. I can now make a mean gravy, by the way. Miss that boy, still. Things didn't work out, but we were together for about 5 years.

I just think there is so much more to the Italian heritage.
