Sergio Oliva Today, His Visa TV Commercial

Well, if someone offered me a big check to say I came in second to the great Arnold, I'd take the money big time!

Lol, that's terrible. Too bad he doesn't even look like a bodybuilder anymore.

Well, as time goes on, we'll have to scale our training down too. Still, its important to enjoy today so that we can reflect on it with fond memories tomorrow, whilst still planning for the day after.

K to you (have to "spread it around" first, but you know what I mean.

I agree; time passes and our bodies become weaker and weaker. But heck, my dad, a rather athletic guy who works out once in a while, looks better than him at his age. He looks like he doesn't even care anymore - like something that was once his passion entirely evaporated into the blue. When I said that it's sad, I didn't mean it in the sense of 'well, he just sucks', but really in a 'sad' sense. But hey, I don't know the whole story so maybe I shouldn't be talking.

Yeah, but he used to be great!! I once met him in Chgo when I lived there. He was at this little whole in the wall bodybuilding supply shop talking on the phone. When I first saw him, I couldn't believe his taper...he had huge shoulders tapering down to an impossibly small waist. That was some 35 or 40 years ago...and I still remember it!

ya.. he was one of my favorites... You cant knock him down for being old...
he still useing the hammer strenght machines... :D at his peak though i think he was better than Anrold..

True "That" he was a copin the area where some of my friends lived on the
"Northwest" side around Noble Square Gardens. Man he was great and still is to me

The ad company people -didn't tell- Sergio what that last comment was gonna be! They chose the weight for him to use. If you look at this clip from a slightly different perspective, Sergio's got a darn good life. I'd have ended with: "Coming in 2nd isn't so bad." Sergio is 64 in this clip, and can still kick much ass. 6 months of dieting and lifting, and he'd be one of the best built men in world all over again, perhaps -the- best for his age group. He was -cheated- out of the crown in '72, in '71 he -beat- Arnold for the same title, and in '70, he won -unopposed-. This means the whole world, including Arnold , didn't think they even had a -chance-. I saw Sergio in his custom tailored police uniform in 1983. Granted, he was "only" 42 but he looked ready to win the 'O' title all over again. Another case of a so-called "has-been" under scrutiny by the multitude of "never-was-es". The internet strikes again.

Dudes gotta be almost 65 if not already. Still working as a cop, thats crazy. He was already competing a few years before Arnold.

Most of them doesn't. Ed Corney, Franco Columbu, Ken Waller. Lou is still big but he is way younger and Arnold is forced to keep his image. And Mike Katz, in Pumping Iron special edition he looks old and fat.

Lou is only 5 yrs younger then arnold.
as for sergio never being able to touch the mr o title after arnold took it.
watch sergio in 1984 and 1985 mrO contest on youtube. sergio gave haney a run for his money.Sergio should have placed higher but due to weider and sergio having a grudge for each other he didnt get the higher placing he deserved.

That's a sweet, sentimental exageration, Chaz. 10th place for Sergio was about right. His conditioning was not up to the standards of 1984 and his posing, sadly, was subpar.

If he'd been harder, shredded, and posed at least as well as Haney he could've made it perhaps to 5th place. Unfortunately Sergio always seemed to be at least 5 years behind everyone else in terms of standards of conditioning. If he'd brought his '84 conditioning to the '80 Mr. O he could've shaken up the top 3 perhaps.

It's stupid because it says no one remembers who came second (to Arnold).
The truth is that the last person Arnold lost to was Sergio. Yes, Arnold came in second to Sergio in 1969 Mr. O. So the commercial is misleading and, for bodybuilders in the know, just plain dumb. It's like playing a commercial with Arnold and claiming at the end that he came in second (to Sergio Oliva) at the 1969 Mr. Olympia and ... no one remembers someone who came in second place. No one remembers any bodybuilder unless they are a huge fan, whether first place or second place. Arnold is the exception to them all. All in all a silly commercial but a nice way to give work to an aging bodybuilder and to give him another 15 minutes of fame. Kind of like King of Queens writing a part for Lou Ferrigno.

That's good for your dad. :)

However I feel that maybe Olivia's body has worn down from the demands he put on it getting to that level. Maybe he has severe arthritis or has really weak tendons, bad back. Who knows? I mean look @ most ex nfl players and the majority are broken down physically. Just throwing that out there as a possible alternative to "he just stopped caring".

WOW!!!
That sucked. He was a 3 time Mr. O winner, beating Arnold once. They totally played up his loss to Arnold in '72 as to why he's a nobody.
Too funny it a sick way.

You're dates are wrong, but your point is right on.

He was shot in the stomach by his wife with his own police issued sidearm, while (or soon after) beating her.
He was never able to train legs the same after that.

I see. Like I said, sometimes life gets in the way and it's not as simple as someone letting themselves go.

+1

Even the great Arnold will be weaker, and appear broken down some day - I think not too long from now. This is the fate of all that age and eventually die. No one, especially Arnold would deny this mans former greatness. And in the minds of real fans...he will be remembered for that long after he is dead and buried. Props to the man, for to still be in here swinging...no matter how light the bat has to be!

Agreed. Good post.

P.S. Arnold looks worse that him right now.

I got Sergio's autograph at the '93 Mr. O. That was after his wife plugged him. He still looked fairly buff, considering.
