Send your kid to private school and you get a tax rebate. N.H. does something right

Re: Send your kid to private school and you get a tax rebate. N.H. does something ri

so the problem is that the public schools don't offer a quality enough education right?

So the people with means pay for private school and their kids get a better education.

The people left in the public school are those who generally can't afford to go to a private school.

So you give tax credits or vouchers back to those who had means enough already to go to private school.

What does that leave the public schools with as far as funding? What about the children with no other option but to go there?

I'm fine with private schoool, I went to private school K-8, but I think they should be equally accessible to all if they are going to start receiving public funding.

My first choice would be to improve the public school systems, the elite prep schools can still exist, I wouldn't ban them, but lets get the public schools up to a level where they can complete! These are the nation's children we are talking about, the future of the country really, isn't it in our best interests to educate them ALL?

Public Schools cost TWICE AS MUCH as private schools on a per-student basis. Look it up.

As a politician - you're not gonna win over voters by sending more money to schools in orange county, and little in Compton. Just not politcally correct.

"Improving public schools" - lol! If you have incredible ideas no one's thought of yet - the school district's phone number is in your blue pages sir.

Oh and education isn't a right. It's a commodity like food, oil, healthcare or energy. And last time I checked - we don't get any of that for free from the government.

Since when has Govt done a better job than the private sector at delivering something? Used to be military - but we've lost 2 wars in a row, and even that's slowly changing.

I'm talking about education, not some consumer product you exchange in a couple years if it doesn't pan out.

I'm not arguing that public schools are somehow BETTER than private, I'm arguing that all children deserve a quality education.

Quality???

Compare our schools to ones in mexico - okay india - okay rural China.

Seems to me even SHITTY COMPTON SCHOOLS wiht $1.2M yearly budgets are light years ahead of schools in India where kids have to walk past dirty sewers and beggars to get to school.

And funny, their graduates eventually come here and take our jobs. You probably work with a few of them.

So what does that say sir?

Feel free to throw other people's money at the problem. Great lazy approach. That's what democrats do - and why I have no desire to vote for liberals.

Hate your kids - put them in public.

I don't have children, so I'm not thinking about myself or my own kids, I'm thinking about the thousands being born today in this country that will end up in public school.

I'll say it again, a strong educational system is a cornerstone of a successful nation.

And the BEST approach if you care about "education" is a private market system. Hence the push for options for parents.

This is no argument. The private sector delivers education that is far better.

Now if you have some magic idea on how to make public schools deliver graduates that rival private school students - we're all ears! Until then, stop taking my taxes to pay for public school students if I'm not putting mine in there. That's called socialism at gunpoint.

You're no different than a dictator who limits choices and freedom for an agenda ("It's for the children!").

Everyone knows the fix though.

1) Get rid of the teachers union. Funny how we put "the future of our country" behind "guaranteed lifetime employment for their educators". No, Sally, our #1 priority is not our children -- they are #2 at best.

2) Regain control of the schools. There's a place for students and a place for criminals. Get the criminals our of there.

3) Get the pot out of schools or the potheads out of school. We're wasting time and money that could be spent on real students with students who wake-and-bake every morning (and often during school as well).

Education, like a nice car, is a luxury. Not a right.

Its your responsibility to earn it.

And Lestat, I do agree with you that education is probably one of the most important issues we need to fix right now, but we have to fix whats broken...which is the public school system as a whole. As Razor said, get rid of the unions, increase teacher pay (and accountability), and fire teachers if their kids dont perform.
