This was a good debate guys. In review of the research literature on both products, the consistent findings indicate that saw palmetto is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (which is what aas users want) however it is not nearly as strong of an inhibitor as finasteride. However, saw palmetto has a multiplicity of actions which make it more effective than finasteride in mild to moderate BPH. It is documented that Saw Palmetto shrinks the prostate with at least 10 different mechanisms.
My opinion: finasteride has better value for aas users with regard to 5-alpha reductase inhibition. Saw palmetto has some value, and can be used in combination with finasteride. Saw palmetto has great value for the average, aging individual who is concerned about his prostate gradually becoming enlarged.
With regard to hairloss......finasteride takes it as well, although saw palmetto does have value here as well......topical spironolactone may be the best.
