LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Opponents of a city ordinance banning lap dancing at strip clubs, bikini bars and adult bookstores have a chance to take their gripe to the ballot box.

The city clerk certified on Monday that activists have collected enough signatures to force a referendum before the "no-touch" rule can go into effect.

The City Council must now decide whether to rescind it, place a referendum on the next citywide ballot in 2005 or add a question to the Democratic presidential primary in March. They have 20 days to decide what to do.

Council members voted unanimously in September to require dancers remain at least six feet from customers and put in place restrictions that also would outlaw "VIP rooms" where nude dancers perform privately.

Supporters of the law have argued that adult entertainment places contribute to prostitution and drug use.

Club owners say the rules infringed on First Amendment rights and would force many out of business. They spent $400,000 to gather more than the required 56,941 signatures to force a vote.

In Montreal you can have strippers, alcohol and touch the strippers everywhere except for the area covered by the bikini. And it only cost 10$/dance.

All over this one Manny. My girlfriend is a dancer here in Los Angeles.

Thus far, they collected OVER twice the amount of required signatures, mine included.

Another fun bit - Halloween night there was a HUGE party at the Key Club on sunset strip. Bands played, there was a costume contest, and a 'strip off'. Lots of fun. Apparently, the proceeds were going to fighting the ordinance. That should be an enormous wad of cash, as that place was packed at $25 bucks a head, and the bars were just flowin'.

This is all a part of the initiative to 'clean up Hollywood'. The city, for a few years, has been trying to get rid of all that they deem dangerous - they have unsuccessfully tried to run the hookers off the street, get rid of the head shops, zap the drug dealers on the streets. Nothing, thus far, has really met with any success. I guess they looked to Beverly Hills, and what they did (ruined a nice club there).

The biggest problem is that alot of patrons think that the ordinance is already in effect. The attendance at most of the places has been cut in half already. As well, if it does pass, you can expect to see alot more areas out here following suit.

There is more info - if I can find it, I'll be sure to post it up. And Los Angeleans - get your ass out there and SAVE THE TITTIES!!!!
