Risk/reward of deadlifts?

I have recently added deadlifts( for the first time) to my routine. In reading many post, I know that alot of you guys/girls do deadlifts as part of your training and I was curious .. Does the benefit or gains acheived from deadlifts outway the potential for a back injury. After my first week of using deads, my lower back was a bit tight, i expected that, but overall i am not sure what I got out of the workout DID 5x5 @ 225. What kinds of gains in mass can be expected from doing deadlifts?

Thanks for the info

Peace:fro:

deads will give you overall strength...allowing you to lift more weight allowing you to make bigger gains....

perfect your form and you will prevent injuries.

You will add much mass to your back, up and down. My traps especially have grown a lot. My avatar is an example of the result of lots of deadlifts. It's nothing greatly impressive, but it's a start to what I hope to become.

There are risks though. I think B Fold, a while back, posted a great article about proper form, what not to do, etc etc etc. Run a search, or maybe B can repost it? It's a very good read.

i agree with both replies--- adding deads is a must to every workout program. Start light, and work on proper form, then work your way up in weight.

Just keep your form tight, ass and hips down, and you'll be fine. I have a bad lower back, but can still deadlift huge amounts of weight with no worries, as long as my form is good

Damn!
You did deads for the first time and all you felt was a bit tight in the lower back?

When I did deads the first time I felt sore as hell from my traps to lats to erectors - and that was only 185.

Maybe you should increase the weight quite a bit?

The first time I did them my lower back, glutes and hams were so tight I could barely bend my knees! lol

Do them! Always be aware of using proper form and you should be fine. I do think it is easier to lose your form if you do reps rather than singles. I imagine that is even more-so when you are using heavy weight. I lack the knowledge to express the difference, but I think if you try starting each rep as a single rather than doing plain reps you will tell the difference in how your muscles fire up.

I am but a puny beginner and after 8 weeks of doing deads I can attest to the effect upon my glutes, hams, and lower back. If they can help me, imagine what they can do for someone who can actually pull some weight. :) I love them.
