Replacing main hard drive??

S.M.A.R.T.T. warnings that main hard drive is FUBAR. This means it is chalk full of errors and is shutting itself down according to one data recovery pro.

Got a new hard drive and ordered legal Windows XP Pro.

Should I expect problems?

Anything I should know?

Dial Tone? jnuts?

Enable the SMARTT warning in BIOS.....it is good to get advance warning that your drive is FUBAR.

ETC:

I tried ghosting the drive but the new drive will not boot up the computer. Can't get the 'puter to operate with both hard drives either. I'm told you can't have Windows on two internal hard drives? Maybe it is OK to extra Windows on an external hard drive?

a partition utility should be good enough and then disconnect the old hard drive. Try booting up. The bios drive may be the reason it is not booting.

As far as having windows 0n 2 internal hard drive , that is silly. I have dupped hard drives (on a scsi bus) and had multiple hard drives running at the same time. No , that is not the issue. It is probably the bios drive issue and Windows boot.ini pointing to the wrong drive

This needs to be moved to computer support

It is easy. Plug in the new drive and re-install what came with the computer.

I have an external USB drive case for hard drives. When an old one goes down, after I install the new drive, I just plug in the old one and then transfer the files.

1....How many hard drives have you lost?

2....After I "transfer the files" from the old drive to the new......will programs like Photoshop work?

1) Dozens. I used to be in IT.

2) No. You will need to reinstall the software on the new drive.

They do have drive copy programs out there though. It will copy the entire drive onto the new one. That is probably what you need.

Raid is overkill for most anyone unless using serial ATA. A good scsi raid controller is a 4 digit card...

Offline mirroring using ghost or partition magic should do the trick. Then when the drive fails , simply replace it with your ghost copied drive

IS your system set up for raid Tboy?

Seems like a good solution for you, plus an external hd backup.

What was the model of your hard drive that went FUBAR?

NORTON GHOST or ACRCONIS DISK SUITE will help you make an image without having to reinstall the programs, You might have to reactivate Windows XP if you are using an OEM version. Should not be trouble activating it as long as youhave not activated the same Key Code within 90 days if you have you will have to call activate XP over the phone.
