Question to do with vials, once you have poked a vial with a needle, how long will it stay sterile?

i've put a needle through twice but now wont be using the rest of the gear. will it keep say three or four months or now that it has been poked should i just throw it away as it will not be sterile in that amount of time.

sorry for the question but i dont know much about vials.

Re: Question to do with vials, once you have poked a vial with a needle, how long wil

In healthcare, as long as you maintain sterile precautions, the vials last until the expiration date (long time). However, the needle needs to be sterile when entering the vial and the vial top needs to be wiped with rubbing alcohol prior to the puncture of the vial. Hands should be washed, etc.

That is correct.

If you open the vial and expose it , you contaminate it to a degree. Won;t kill you, but I wouldn't do it.

You need to handle everything with “sterile technique”

do a Google search and familiarize your self with how to perform a simple “sterile technique” with regards to injections.

In biological research, cell cultures are protected with a laminar flow hood, UV light to kill bacteria/spores/etc, HEPA air filtration, and cleanroom setups.

If you want to open the vial and take the rubber stopper off then this is the protocol that is required (and still not a guarantee). Spores and other airborne pathogens can enter the vial.

Once the vial is open it is no longer sterile by definition.

thanks guys but you misunderstood. i have taken the rubber stopper off, i wounltnt do that. what i have done is poke a needle through twice to draw out the gear but i wont be using anymore from the 10ml vial (only used 2ml) i want to save it for next time maybe 3 or 4 months. wanted to check one the rubber is poked through with a needle will it say sterile for that period of time or will germs get in through where the needle has been?
