Question re: starting free weights

Hi, I was wondering if some of you ladies might be able to give me a little advice...

I've done some minor weight training on health club circuit weights, but I'm disabled and currently homebound, so I mainly do cardio and Pilates. I just found out that my father bought me a weight bench and free weights for Christmas(what a wonderful gift!), and I have no idea how to get started.

I want to do this safely, so I was hoping that someone might have some suggestions for beginning training with free weights. The set has both long and short bars, including a bar for curls, with plates ranging from 2 pounds to 20 pounds - 180 pounds altogether. The bench is designed to use for both arm and leg workouts.

If anyone has some suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. I'd also be interested in purchasing a video of some sort to help me along as well, since I'm unfamiliar with most free weight exercises and don't want to wind up breaking my arms...lol... So if anyone knows of a good tape, that would be great too.

I really appreciate your help! Thanks!

LOL - if I could afford a trainer, I'd be all for it. Preferably one that looked like Brad Pitt. Heh.

I think what you outlined is doable.

My disability is just a neurological thing. It rarely affects my mobility - just my vision. Just means that I can't drive, and have special computer crap. No big.

I'm so excited about this. I haven't been able to go to the gym in about a year, so this is huge.

I really appreciate your help - very cool of you. I'm open for any and all suggestions.

I have an extremely strong back and legs, since that's what I've concentrated on most in the past, but my arms are pretty scrawny and weak, and my abs could use a lot of work(vertical C-section a few years ago - never quite recovered).

if u go to www.eas.com to the training section there is an area that allows u to click on the exercise and it shows a video clip of a person doing the exercise....

i'll try to go and post a link...but u may have to register at the site to see that area...but it's free..

ok...trance...

go to the eas site and register under the training section...when you have completed the registration it opens a page that is your personalized training program....

if u click the my workout link and look at them for various days....it has lists of exercises for that day....clicking on the exercise brings up description of exercise and short video of the exercise being done....hope this helps...the video also highlights muscles being worked by the movement

I think the Body For Life book has pics in it and a guide to chart your progress

(sorry if I'm mistaken)
