Question... not sure where to post this here

I am on Androgel as part of a TRT regimen and my insurance is about to lapse until February.

I have an appointment with my doctor this wednesday and I hope to convince her to use a compounding pharmacy to alleviate a lot of the cost and to get me a better product.

I am not sure of the rules of the board regarding this, but how can I find a reputable compounding pharmacy and how can I convince her to go this route?

you're right...not a good time, OR PLACE to ask....your current provider should be able to provide you with that info...... GL

thats what I figured, just had to try

I know the time is horrible but it sucks that people who actually use the service legitimately get drowned out by those that abuse it.

thank you.

You didn't say how much AndroGel you were prescribed, but the stuff runs about $250 per box (of the 50mg packets), and if you're taking two per day, the box only lasts two weeks. In comparison, prescrip test cypionate (branded, Pharmacia) is about $120 per 10ml vial (dosed at 200mg/ml). For HRT, this would last about 10 weeks (1ml shot/week).

If cost is a concern, just tell your doc that you can't afford the AndroGel and would prefer to be switched to a more economical alternative such as injectables. How could she argue with this? Plus, the injectables are just a better product, IMO.

Good luck.

Sounds good to me.

I am on 10mg per day.... I am on the pump and it takes 4 pumps for 4 weeks. This shit is wicked pricey without insurance.

I have an appointment with her wednesday and I am really going to try to convince her to go the shot route and trust my judgement with this and not continue with the overpriced, insurance company has me by the balls, androgel.

what should I tell her about dosage and whatnot so I can go in there with convincing info besides price that tells her that I know what I am talking about?

thank you for the info and I just read that sticky about labs.... yea I come from another forum and didn't get a chance to read your stickies yet. :)

questions about TRT and compunding pharmacies via doctors scripts are fine imo, but you might get a better answer in the life extension forum - I'll copy this there as well

Ok, 10mg per day is just about the max effective, absorbable dose that you get from the gel. This equates to 70mg per week. HRT shots usually fall in the 100mg-200mg per week range. If she keeps your dose about the same, she'll probably prescribe 100mg/ew and then do bloodwork after 6-8 weeks to assess how well its working. So that would be 1/2ml of the cypionate 200 - your vial should last you about 5 months.

So, I would just tell your doc that you've been doing research into other alternatives given your insurance situation, and you found that injections would be MUCH cheaper than the gel. Tell her that you'd like to try the injections. I wouldn't get too cocky and tell her what dosage to put you on; I've never seen HRT prescribed at less than 100/7-10 days. You can also tell her that the gel is an inconvenience for you (drys your skin, can't shower for 3 hours after application, sweat alot, etc), so the injections just seem like an all-around better option.

BTW - drugstore.com has generic (Watson) test cypionate for $90 per 10ml vial (200mg/ml) - what a bargain!!

That's about right, but I get upjohn eth without insurence in New York City at CVS for $80 so it's not such a bargain.

The doc may tell you, you have to come back to the office for the shots. Do it once or twice then just tell him your sister in law in a nurse and she'll do it for you. Shouldn;t be a problem.

If you are getting a prescription, well its legal...........about compounding pharmacies....there is an amazing tool in the internet called "GOOGLE", there is another one called "YAHOO"

Yeah, but most states don't allow for compounding of a controlled substance. You can get a single dose (usually 5ml) with no refills.

thanks a lot, pal... hey I tried all those, but you know there is something called "referrals" and "I recommend these guys because they are good" that google and yahoo won't always tell you.

another amazing tool is called shutting up if you have the urge to be a wiseass for no reason.

advisor is a great bro with a wealth of information.

hes on my buddy list, but im not on his.
Im sure he is a wealth of knowledge, but I was asking for some direction.

he could have simply said "read the sticky about this subject" or maybe PM'd me and handled it differently.

to come off like he did was pretty much uncalled for.

this IS a bulletin board and not face to face so it gives nobody any excuse to flex their "muscles", but maybe those platinum muscles have to be worked out...

I'm not really that knowledgeable about compounding pharmacies, hence why I asked.
