Question for those who've made great gains on their own, and those who had trainers..

I posted this on the training board, but it gets very little traffic compared to this one. If it gets moved, it gets moved, but here it goes anyway...

My boy did his first cycle this year. he's a big kid naturally, but man, did he blow up and seems to be holding gains just fine as it's 2 weeks since he finished up. He works out with a friend of his who competes and this guy is gonna start training him (paid service) because my boy wants to do a show. I can't really afford a trainer, but this guys seems to be good. Guys who came a long way on their own, was all trial and error the whole time? And guys who had trainers, what did they determine about you before they began training you and what did they do so differently from what you were doing? Thanks. For the record I'm under 10% BF and currently have a 34' waist (only getys to 33" @7%) and 16-1/2 inch arms (Sucks), 5'9 192 lbs. Just to give you guys an idea of where I'm at.

Alot of the gains I made were due to reading up on training methods and then trial and error in the gym seeing what worked for me. I do not believe in using a trainer unless you just dont have the will power or time to do it on your own. I myself would consult someone well experienced in the nutrition of getting contest ready.

I wouldn't be caught dead with those panzies. Trainors are for girls and small guys who have no idea what they're doing. Just do your research. Find a friend to work out with for a while who knows what he's doing. Get pointers from the big guys in your gym. Do you see any of the muscle freaks with trainors? I never have, not at my gyms anyway.

I hear ya on what you're sayin, but the guy trainin my friend now is jacked the fuck up. I've done my fair share of trial and error and what not, and still have new styles and methods to employ, but I was just wondering. I may get to where I wanna be on my own, but if someone could get me their faster, it would be great to save the time and trouble of finding out what doesn't work.

Just ask your friend what his trainor has him doing, what supplements, and what his diet is like. If you really want to pay to tag along with some trainor, then be my guest. Even when you're doing "trial and error", your still hitting your body in ways that can help down the road. Get to know what works for your body if you haven't already.

Uh, did you ever hear of a guy named Ronnie Coleman? He has a trainer...his name is Chad Nichols. Ever hear of him?
This is an assinine statement. If you talk to any of the top pro's they all have trainers/nutritionist. I take personal offense to this becomes I am a trainer/nutritionist. It's not my full time job, but I can tell you that it's the best investment an athlete can make. Why waste years trying to figure shit out on your own, when you can hire a knowledgeable person to get you where you want to go w/in months.

Case in point, Ronnie places 10th at the 1997 O. Hires Chad and wins in 98 and ever since. Not bad. Yes, it's that crucial.

I got a trainer to look over my training/ diet when I start my contest diet in july.. gonna meet once- twice a week.. he won a major show in light- heavies last summer so i am gonna trust him.

I wasn't saying don't get one. I, personally, just wouldn't use one. I'm sure they're smart and know a lot of useful stuff that can help people. I've even gotten some advice from some. I just wouldn't pay someone to tell me how to work out and what to eat when I'm smart enough to figure that out on my own. Trainors definitely have their place, and I'm sure they help the pro's a lot. I respect what they do, and I didn't mean to come across so harsh. Was more of a joke than anything, but I still wouldn't use one.

I have been competeing for quite a while now and have had 4 trainers, each one is different in the approach to training, and drugs, dieting is a little different as each person requires different dietary needs.
Krishna however thinks he does not need a trainer which is fine that is his belief, I think if you are going to compete let me refraze that if you are going to compete You NEED a trainer, you cannot do it yourself, you need someone to look at you objectively.

I am now working with Charles Glass and making great strides in my training, dieting, and my overall feeling about my physique. He says I will be pro in 2-4 yrs, he is the most complete and thorugh trainer I have ever worked with. And when we work out it is the most intense, gut busting training ever. Charles is the man, but he will not work with anyone off the street, infact just to get ahold of him is nearly impossible, he is very busy, and the most sought after trainer in the world. It is a good thing we have friends in common...Or I might not have had the chance to work with him.

All in all it depends on your goals in training, and your bank account too.
